Everyone says “just go freelance” after a layoff. But what does that even mean when you’ve worked for someone else your whole career? 🥺

I get it. It’s not as simple as it sounds. Here’s where I’d start:

1. Write down every skill from every job you’ve had, even the random ones.

2. Turn one of them into a single sentence: “I help ___ with ___ so they can ___.”

3. Add that sentence to your LinkedIn headline or About section, so people know what you offer the moment they land on your profile.

I’ve been laid off three times in 15 years. So I’m building How to Survive an Ugly Job Market, a survival kit so you can start with what already worked for me.

Send this to someone who keeps hearing “just freelance” 🤎

Job searching is the most unrequited love dynamic you will ever be in. That’s why it’s so important to have something of your own.

Lauren was one of my first friends when I moved to LA in 2010, and we’ve both been through three layoffs. I’ve watched her go from The Hollywood Reporter to Amazon Music to CapCut to a stint delivering groceries for Instacart, and now she’s working for herself. Somewhere in all those bridges between jobs, she built something of her own.

I know those bridges too. They taught me more than any one job ever could 🤎

A better job is coming for you. BUT in the meantime, here’s what I want you to do this week.

1. Instead of endlessly submitting resumes on LinkedIn, find a WhatsApp or Slack group of freelancers and gig workers, and network there.

2. Skip the comparison scroll pleeease. Those “I got a new job!” posts make you happy for them and want to die inside all at the same time. Protect your mental health, girl 🙏🏾.

3. Get fresh air, and go get a hug from somebody, or your dog. I’m a big fan of oxytocin boosting!

Laid off three times in 15 years, I figured it out through trial and error. So I’m building How to Survive an Ugly Job Market, a survival kit so you can start with what already worked for me.

If you just got laid off, this one’s for you 🤎

Going through a layoff is a mindf**k. So here are 3 things I want you to do this week:

1. Go for a walk every single day. It gets you out of your head.

2. Lean on your peeps. Call that friend who always makes you laugh. Go get a hug from your parents if they live nearby.

3. Write down everything you’re good at, even the random stuff. Girl, you have way more skills than you even realize!

I’ve been laid off 3 times in 15 years, and I figured it out through a lot of trial and error. So I’m building a survival kit for the ugly job market, so you can skip some of the guesswork upfront.

I know we do this every year…lament towards the end before the year is even done. But still…

Before another year begins…
Reflecting kind of wraps it up don’t you think?
Weighing what worked work and what didn’t. What you decide to let go of. What you make peace with. The risks you took. For me that was moving to Madrid for a few months. Rebranding my business while rewriting my life. Coming back to the states to spend time with my parents and do a roadtrip with my 74 year old dad.

All little and big things matter. All of it. Man oh man, what’s in store for 2027?

May we look after our breast health as intensely as we look after our skincare and our matcha-Pilates rituals.

It’s not a dig at you; it’s a wish 🙏🏾

I know many of us are told to wait until age 40 to get our mammograms and ultrasounds done. As much as you fight for other things important to you, also be your strongest advocate for these exams. Research shows the earlier the better for risk assessments (age 25 preferably).

With love,
Tasha 💗

The American College of Radiology recommends every woman get a breast cancer risk assessment by 25 to see whether she needs screening before 40. Women who come out higher risk should start yearly mammograms somewhere between 25 and 40, depending on their specific risk.

Everyone’s mad about AI avatars right now. But I used one. And here’s the thing: it’s not so black and white. Let me explain. ✋🏾

About a year ago, I was living in Lima, and I wanted to be out exploring more than I wanted to be inside filming. So I recorded my likeness and uploaded it with my voice to an avatar app, and started testing it in trial reels.

Trial reels are for strangers, thankfully, and they had no idea it wasn’t me (to be fair, they didn’t know me anyway.)

But it never felt “right”, so I never posted it to my main feed. (It was the eyes, especially… mine have a sparkle, and hers were flat.)

The cruel joke of it all? You build a business you can run from anywhere. You get to live in these beautiful places. And then you’re stuck inside creating content 😭

So sometimes the choice is: let the tool show up for you, or post less and stay fully you.

I don’t have a perfect answer. But I wrote about it at the time on my Substack 💌 Link in bio.

Would you use one? 🧐

When you realize the problem is you 🫠

For a long time, I prided myself on wearing all the hats in my business. Now I’m like, no ma’am, absolutely not.

I can’t be the admin, the ops manager, the accounts payable person, the writer, and the marketer. It’s a lot.

VAs have helped, and I recently took on a business partner for one branch of my business. It feels good.

Sometimes wanting 100% control is the only thing blocking your growth. Building something of your own doesn’t mean building it alone.

Wearing all the hats too? Let me help you take one off. Book a strategy session, link in bio ✨

When you remember that the niche is YOU. Your thought process, the experiments in life that you make, the leaps of faith that you take, the ways you produce for yourself. You are the niche. Everything else is just a byproduct of that and the container that you pour into. Don’t ever forget that.

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves who the f*%$ we are.

Write it down in your morning pages like I just did:

Who I’ve shown up for in my friendships

How I’ve brought beauty into the world

How I’ve survived 3 layoffs in my career and still transcended

Help others create their own thing for their own stability too

How I moved myself abroad 3 different times solo with 2 (and a half? 🥲) suitcases and my Malti-sh*tz Nala

Things like this remind me during my periods of self-doubt to keep going 🙏🏾 In some woo woo circles it’s called trust muscle exercises, but I prefer calling it “remind yourself who the f%* # you are”.

Ok now it’s YOUR TURN 🙌
