The 4 Types of PDRN Ingredients in the Market
When we guide our clients through the world of PDRN, one of the first things we explain is that not every ingredient marketed as “PDRN” is the same. There are four main categories you’ll see in skincare products, and each one has a very different story in terms of source, processing, effectiveness, and how brands should position it. Let us walk you through them step by step.
Authentic PDRN (Sodium DNA from Salmon)
When we say “authentic PDRN,” we mean the real thing: Sodium DNA extracted from salmon or trout s***m cells. This is the form that has been most studied and most trusted in both medical aesthetics and high-end cosmetics. The extraction involves precise enzymatic cutting and purification to preserve the DNA fragments in a size range that makes them biologically active. Because the molecular integrity is maintained, this version of PDRN delivers the strongest regenerative effects.
From our experience, authentic PDRN is the gold standard. It is clinically recognized for deep skin regeneration, strong anti-inflammatory action, collagen synthesis, and accelerated tissue repair. Brands that want to launch products in the premium category—especially those inspired by medical-grade treatments—usually choose this type. It’s not the cheapest option, but it is the one that provides the most credibility and the clearest results for end users. For us, whenever a client is serious about building a high-performance anti-aging or post-treatment recovery product, authentic PDRN is where the conversation starts.
c-PDRN (Cosmetic-Grade PDRN Fragments)
The second category is c-PDRN, which we sometimes describe to clients as the “accessible version” of PDRN. It comes from the same salmon DNA source, but the processing is different. Instead of being extracted to medical standards, it undergoes simplified purification and more fragmentation, which lowers the purity and activity level compared to authentic PDRN.
Now, does that make it ineffective? Not at all. c-PDRN still provides skin repair, collagen support, and anti-inflammatory benefits. The difference is that the results are not as dramatic or as clinically validated as the authentic version. For many private label brands, though, c-PDRN strikes a great balance: it allows them to carry the PDRN claim, deliver visible improvements, and keep production costs in check. We often recommend c-PDRN for mid-tier brands or for products where the target consumer values performance but also needs affordability. It gives you the story of PDRN without the same price tag as the medical-grade version.
Hydrolyzed DNA (Generic DNA Fragments)
Then we have hydrolyzed DNA, which is where things can get a bit tricky. This ingredient is made by breaking down DNA from various sources—not always salmon—through enzymatic or acid hydrolysis. The result is a mixture of small, uneven DNA fragments. While hydrolyzed DNA can offer hydration and mild antioxidant properties, it does not have the same regenerative mechanism as PDRN. That’s because the molecular integrity that gives authentic PDRN its power is largely lost in the process.
Here’s where we see a risk: in the market, some cheaper products will list hydrolyzed DNA but still promote themselves as “PDRN skincare.” That creates confusion, and if your brand leans on that kind of labeling, it can backfire with savvy consumers or regulatory checks. From our perspective as a manufacturer, hydrolyzed DNA can still play a role in cosmetic formulations—it works as a supportive moisturizing or antioxidant ingredient—but we would never position it as a true replacement for PDRN. Transparency matters here, and we always encourage our clients to market it honestly.
Plant-Based “PDRN” (Marketing Concept)
The last type is the most misleading: so-called plant-based PDRN. You may have seen products advertised as “ginseng PDRN,” “green tea PDRN,” or even “rose PDRN.” The reality is that plants simply do not produce nucleotides equivalent to salmon DNA. What’s actually inside these products are plant extracts or ferment lysates, often rich in polyphenols, saponins, or antioxidants. Those compounds can certainly be beneficial—they may brighten skin, soothe inflammation, or protect against free radicals—but they are not PDRN.
We view this as more of a marketing strategy than a scientific reality. Brands use the “PDRN” label to ride the wave of the ingredient’s popularity, but the effect comes from the plant properties, not from DNA repair. The risk is that if consumers or professionals discover that the claim is exaggerated, it can damage brand trust. That’s why we always advise clients: if you want to use plant extracts, market them for what they are. Don’t rely on calling them “PDRN” unless you’re prepared for skeptical questions.

How Blue Light Leads to Hyperpigmentation

The skin remembers the damage or inflammation that caused the initial melanin overproduction, making it prone to further discoloration unless the underlying factors are managed. This is why ongoing treatment and protection from sun damage are essential to prevent the return of hyperpigmentation.
Why Hyperpigmentation Has "Memory"
Melanin Production Response:
Once skin is damaged or inflamed, melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin) can become overactive and continue producing excess pigment.
Deep-Rooted Pigment:
Pigment can become deeply embedded in the skin layers, particularly the dermis, which takes longer to fade and increases the likelihood of recurrence.
