According to the National Academy of Sciences, around 95% of chemical ingredients used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum, or crude oil.

Among those ingredients are benzene derivatives, aldehydes, and phthalates (shown to disrupt hormonal activity and linked to liver and breast cancer).
