Why Do You Need More Protein After 40?
The same protein that built muscle when you were 25 triggers a weaker response once you're past 40.
And understanding why is going to change the way you eat.
So let me explain what's going on inside your muscles.
When you eat protein, your body breaks it down into amino acids.
And one in particular, leucine, is the trigger that tells your muscle cells to start building new tissue.
Leucine activates a signaling pathway called mTOR, and when enough leucine reaches your muscle cells, mTOR switches on and your body starts building new muscle protein.
That's how the protein you eat becomes actual muscle.
Now here's what changes.
As you age past 40, your muscle cells gradually become less sensitive to that leucine signal.
The protein still gets digested and the amino acids still arrive at the muscle, but the response is weaker.
Your body now needs more leucine to get the same activation it used to get with less.
And this is called anabolic resistance.
And the research puts numbers on this.
A study published in the Journals of Gerontology found that men averaging age 71 needed 67 percent more protein per meal to maximize that muscle building signal compared to younger adults.
And a 2021 study of 16 adults over 60, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that the leucine requirement was more than double the current recommendation, and that held for both men and women.
And this is exactly why the standard protein recommendation isn't enough if you're over 40 and training.
The research shows that for adults over 65, you need at least 0.45 to 0.55 grams per pound per day just to maintain muscle.
So here's what I tell everyone I work with.
Aim for one gram of protein per pound of your goal body weight per day, with at least 30 to 40 grams at each meal.
And combine that with resistance training because training restores some of that lost sensitivity.
Your muscles are still capable of responding to protein.
They just need a stronger signal to do it.
The other thing that matters is protein quality.
Higher leucine content means better activation.
Animal proteins like beef, chicken, fish, and eggs have more leucine per gram than most plant proteins.
If you're relying on plant proteins, you'll need even more total protein to hit the same leucine threshold.
The bottom line is that the older you get, the more protein matters, not less.
And spreading it across multiple meals throughout the day keeps that signal active instead of hoping one big meal does the job.

Why Does Eating Protein First Lower Your Blood Sugar?
You know that hormone that Ozempic targets to help people lose weight?
Your body already makes it.
And one of the easiest ways to trigger it naturally is just by eating your protein before your carbs.
Let me explain how this works.
When you eat carbs first, they hit your bloodstream as glucose within minutes.
Your pancreas spikes insulin to clear it, overshoots, your blood sugar crashes, and you feel hungry again an hour later.
But when you eat protein first, three things change.
The first is that protein takes longer to break down than carbs.
So when it arrives in your stomach first, it physically slows down the rate that your entire meal empties into your small intestine.
That means the carbs you eat after get absorbed more gradually instead of all at once.
And this alone prevents that rapid glucose spike.
The second thing is that protein in your small intestine triggers something called GLP-1, which is the exact same hormone that drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro target.
So when you eat protein first, you're activating the same pathway those drugs use.
GLP-1 slows your digestion even further, it helps your pancreas prepare a more controlled insulin response, and it tells your brain you're full.
And the third thing is that because glucose enters your bloodstream gradually, your pancreas doesn't need as large of an insulin spike.
And that means no crash afterward.
A 2015 study published in Diabetes Care tested the exact same meal eaten in a different order.
When participants ate protein and vegetables first, their blood sugar was 37 percent lower at 60 minutes.
This was originally tested in diabetics, but the same research group repeated it in 2025 and found peak glucose was 44 percent lower with carbs last.
And that study tested it in real world conditions and the effect held up.
So this is really simple.
When you sit down to eat, eat your protein first, then your vegetables, then your carbs.
You don't need to wait between them.
Just eat in that order.
