Our partner, Dr. Jerome Morris, Associate Professor of Education at the University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL) defines agency as, a heuristic to describe the collective actions by Black people to positively influence Black childrenβs schooling.
He gives us insight into what it takes to be communally bonded, through intergenerational bonding, building trust and inviting in, cultural affirmation, and consciousness rising. Black Girls Do STEM as an informal learning environment is creating agency and advancing the social and educational attainment of our Black girls.
Inviting Parents In: We ask and they show up, About 40% of our parents volunteer at least once doing various activities. We make STEM a family affair with parents and siblings being invited to all field trips and college tours. Our parents have asked for their own parent STEM night, and we are working on making this a reality for the 2024 program year.
Building Community Trust: We anchor our programming in community locations where youth programs and youth voice is centered. We have had a longstanding 5-year relationship with Thomas Dunn Learning Center since our start back in 2019, we are very proud of all of our long-standing community partnerships.
Consistency and Stability: Our program is set at the beginning of each program year. Parents get dates, locations, and transportation information to make sure their students can have the best experience in the program. We have staff and volunteers assigned cohorts they work with for the entirety of the program year allowing girls to form meaningful relationships with trusted adults over time as they learn and grow with us.
Empowering Student Voice: Black Girls Do STEM not only passes the mic but pays Black girls and their parents for their time, feedback, and knowledge as they lead in the organization. Our student advisory committee consist of girls who started in 2019 and they spearhead various task related to programming, and board member selection and hear what our students and parents said at focus groups led alongside our partner at Vanderbilt Peabody College of Education.
Save the date for our Fall Community Showcase on October 22nd, 1-4 pm, to join our student champions as they show you how Black Girls Do STEM builds agency.
