The snow is melting quickly now as yesterday and today temps have been mid 50’s. This pile may have been 10-12 inches higher on Tuesday.

This is how floating gardens in Chicago are cleaning the river after centuries of pollution!

During the industrial boom back in the 1800s the Chicago River became really polluted due to waste from factories, raw sewage and runoff from the meatpacking industry.

But now, nonprofit Urban Rivers are reversing its fortunes.

They’ve created a floating eco-park called the Wild Mile that acts like a wetland where loads of plants and animals can thrive.

Right now it stretches about 700 feet, and after adding another 300 feet last year, it’s still growing, with a full mile firmly in sight.

The floating plants send their roots down into the water, which helps detoxify the river by absorbing harmful pollution and breaking it down into less harmful substances.

These wonderful volunteers are called the River Rangers and they help remove rubbish by kayak, monitor, plant health and garden the floating plant rafts to make sure weeds and invasive species are kept at bay.

They’re also restoring important wildlife species too! Successfully reintroducing 5,000 mussels to the river last year! With each one filtering up to 20L of water each day.

The Wild Mile has been such a huge success and the team are working with other cities across North America to help clean their waterways too!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL. Want to start the new year with a new habit? How about helping to eliminate clothing going into landfills. REMAINS here in St. Louis collects old clothing, towels, sheets any textiles and works with a company to break them down and make NEW fabric out of your castoffs. REMAINS is located down on Morganford in the City and has accessible drop boxes 24/7. BUT they also have other boxes scattered around the city. The one closest to me is at HOLY REDEEMER CHURCH 17 Joy Avenue in WEBSTER GROVES. REMAINS even collects the clothing Good Will can't sell and plans to trash, and likely other donated items from other resale businesses. If you aren't in St. Louis, look for a textile recycler in your area.
