Structured to Move. Built to Last.
I’m Donovan Mills a dry haircutting specialist, educator, and co-owner of Hideaway Salon in West Hollywood, California
I specialize in movement-based haircuts, natural texture, and long-lasting wearable hair.
She hadn’t stepped into a salon in 7 years… and somehow trusted a complete stranger to cut her hair.
There are moments in this career that go far beyond hair.
I was teaching a dry haircutting class near Grand Rapids when she walked in and shared something that honestly hit me hard…
She hadn’t been inside a hair salon in seven years.
Seven years of avoiding the chair.Seven years of holding onto fear, uncertainty, or maybe just life itself.
And for some reason… she trusted me.
Not because she knew me personally. Not because she had sat in my chair before. But because something in her finally felt safe enough to take that step.
That kind of trust is not something I take lightly.
As a haircut educator, I love teaching haircutting techniques, movement, shape, balance, and all the technical side of dry cutting…
But moments like this remind me what this career is really about.
Sometimes a haircut transformation is not just about hair.
Sometimes it’s healing.Sometimes it’s letting go.Sometimes it’s finally seeing yourself again after years of hiding.
And honestly, being trusted with something that personal by someone who didn’t even know me… it felt like confirmation that I’m exactly where God wants me to be.
Not just to cut hair. But to help people feel something again.
That’s the part of this career I’ll never stop loving.

The right haircut doesn’t just change your hair.It changes how you carry yourself.
I’ve known her for over 15 years.
Life has taken her through a lot since the last time I cut her hair. She lost her home in a fire, rebuilt from nothing, continued raising her child, and still carries herself with strength, softness, and grace through it all.
That kind of resilience deserves to feel beautiful.
She has incredibly thick, heavy hair the kind many stylists get intimidated by. But honestly, that’s the kind of hair I love working with most. Hair with movement. Hair with presence. Hair that needs understanding, not control.
So instead of fighting her natural texture, we worked with it.
We removed excess weight without taking away her identity.Created soft movement and flow.Built an effortless shape that grows out beautifully. And added curtain bangs that opened up her features while working with her natural growth patterns and cowlicks.
No overstyling.Nothing forced.Just soft, lived-in hair designed to move naturally and fit her real life.
She’s the kind of woman who spends more time by the river with her dog than in front of a mirror and that’s exactly who this haircut was built for.
Low maintenance.Lived in Free moving.Beautiful without trying.
I’ve always believed some of the strongest people in the world are single mothers. The amount of sacrifice, resilience, pressure, and love they carry every day is something most people will never fully understand.
This wasn’t just about a haircut for me.It was about helping someone feel like herself again.
And honestly… that meant everything to me.

The MOD cut was never meant to look perfect.
Jason wanted something different this time.
Less polished.More attitude.More texture.More movement.
So we built a modern MOD-inspired curly haircut designed around his natural curl pattern, face shape, and head shape.
Short fringe.Collapsed sides.Length through the back.Soft texture throughout.
What makes this curly haircut work is the silhouette.
Instead of creating extra bulk or unnecessary width, we kept everything tighter to the shape of the head so the curls move naturally and feel effortless without looking over styled.
The result feels lived-in.A little rock and roll.A little vintage. But still modern.
This is the type of textured haircut that actually gets better over time.
Cut to move. Built to last.
If you wear a hair unit… your haircut matters more than ever.
This was his second time in my chair… and this time, we took it further.
When you wear a hair unit or hair system, it’s not just about making it look good… it’s about making it look completely natural and undetectable.
The first appointment was about building the foundation creating the initial blend between the hair unit and natural hair.
This time, we focused on adding more length through the front while keeping it soft, natural, and lived-in.
The biggest challenge with any hair system is the blend.
You’re connecting natural hair with a hair unit, and if that blend isn’t done properly, it becomes noticeable.
So everything came down to
precision cutting and connection.
Maintaining length while removing weight in the right areas so the hair moves as one.
No separation.
No harsh lines.
Just a seamless blend between the hair unit and natural hair.
This is where technique, consultation, and experience make all the difference.
