As Argentina and Spain prepare to face each other in the FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday, a picture of Lionel Messi holding a baby has resurfaced. Who's the baby, you might ask? Spanish soccer star Lamine Yamal. It's a picture so serendipitous, it almost seems like it must be AI-generated. However, it's very real.

The fateful shoot happened eighteen years ago when Yamal's family won a raffle to have their picture taken with a Barcelona player at Camp Nou. Messi, then only 20 years old and a few years with the club, was coincidentally paired with Yamal – and the rest is history.

"Messi is a pretty introverted guy, he's shy," photographer Joan Monfort told the AP in 2022. "He was coming out of the locker room and suddenly he finds himself in another locker room with a plastic tub full of water and a baby in it. ... He didn't even know how to hold him at first."
