We are super excited with this guys performance in Ponoka last weekend at the Bar TT Cowhorses Wild Rose Derby hosted by Alberta Stock Horse Association!
Blindfolded, owned by Sheila Mowat, and shown by Clint Swales earned themselves the Open Derby Championship! We are awfully proud of this young stallion and his consistency amongst the great talent shown, splitting the win in the reined work, second in the herd work, and high score in the fence work.
To add to the excitement, he will also be heading to Calgary Stampede in the Open Hackamore after earning his qualification this weekend as well!

Ground Prep Series with Dr. Bailey Smith - Neck Stretches ⭐

First up, Neck Stretches! Neck stretches can be performed laterally and/or ventrally by baiting your horse with a treat. First try to bait their head to the elbow, then to the middle of their barrel, and finally back to the flank, allowing them a treat for obtaining and holding the pose for 3-5 seconds. Repeat each direction twice. The key to the lateral flexion is to try to keep your horses head upright and not let them twist at the poll to obtain the position.

Next try ventral flexion! Begin by baiting your horse to first put their chin to their chest, then between their knees, and finally between their fetlocks. This activity activates abdominal and back stabilization muscles, and encourages flexibility through the neck and back. As you and your horse progress, try a combination of lateral and ventral with side-to-side flexion near the ground!

Keep in mind, each horse is unique, and will have varied levels of mobility due to a multitude of factors. It is important to always meet them where they are at, and if you have concerns, our veterinarians are happy to chat!
