Girls Talk! Panel Discussion

The Bloemfontein High Court has sentenced Tumelo Mothupi (46) to 24 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his 51-year-old ex-girlfriend.

On Saturday, 19 October 2024, at about 23:00, the accused visited his ex-girlfriend’s home. While at the house, he stabbed her with a knife and also hit her with a brick, leaving her to die.

The accused fled the scene but was spotted by a family member when he left. The accused was nowhere to be found and was later arrested through intelligence gathering, which was operationalised by a police team together with Sergeant Tsholo, attached to the Bloemspruit SAPS Detectives Branch. Tumelo was arrested and charged with murder on Sunday, 03 November 2024.

The accused was denied bail and remained in custody until the Bloemfontein High Court sentenced him to 24 years’ imprisonment on Wednesday, 28 April 2026.

The Investigating Officer was Detective Sergeant Sechaba Tsholo.

The then 13-year-old victim reported to her mother that on Saturday, 17 June 2023, at about 17:00, she was on her way from her grandmother when she was approached by an unknown male at the time, who grabbed her by the hand and took her to an unknown address, where he r***d her without wearing any protection.

The victim further reported that while the suspect was busy ra**ng her, the suspect’s phone rang, and she could hear the person on the line asking for the suspect’s Facebook name, which is how she managed to obtain the suspect’s name.

The case was reported at SAPS Kwa-Thema and assigned to Detective Warrant Officer Tebogo Lephoto of the Springs Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

The accused, Mlungisi Nxumalo, was traced, arrested and positively linked to the case through the thorough investigation conducted by Detective Warrant Officer Lephoto, until the Springs Magistrate’s Court found him guilty as charged on 03 March 2026 and sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment.

The Ekurhuleni District Commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, has welcomed the conviction and applauded Detective Warrant Officer Tebogo Lephoto for the dedication demonstrated during the investigation. She also encouraged other investigators to put more effort into GBV cases and other serious crimes.

The Free State High Court, sitting in Bloemfontein has sentenced 30-years-old Jeremia Sekgoko Tsoanyane, from Peter Swart - Bloemfontein, on multiple charges of kidnapping and r**e incidents that happened in Mangengenene cemetery from 2021.

It was discovered during trial that the modus operandi for all Phahameng Cemetery cases were similar.

The 16-year-old victim testified in court that on Monday, 23 August 2021, at about 07:30, she was on her way to the school where she had to walk through Magengenene cemetery as usual. The suspect called her by her name, which he might have seen written on her school bag. He then threatened her with a knife, grabbed and dragged her to the trees where he r***d her.

The second 17-year-old victim testified that on Wednesday, 12 January 2022, at approximately 07:30, she was on her way to school using the same route that passes through Magengenene cemetery when the suspect threatened her with a knife, grabbed her and dragged her out of the cemetery towards the factories where he forcefully undressed her and r***d her.

The third 17-year-old victim testified that on Wednesday, 12 January 2022 at about 07:30, she was on her way to school when she met her assailant, who threatened her with a knife before he undressed and r***d her near the factories in Mangengenene cemetery area.

The fourth 25-year-old victim testified that on Saturday, 30 July 2022, she was on her way to visit her father and walked through Magengenene cemetery, where she was approached by an unknown African male wearing a mask. He threatened her with a knife and took her to the other side of the graveyard where he undressed and r***d her.

Jeremia Sekgoko Tsoanyane was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for r**e on 29 January 2024.

The court heared during trial how on Friday, 2 July 2023 at about 06:00, the 28-year-old victim received a call from the suspect who promised to find work for her. They arranged to meet so that the suspect could take her to the new workp
