Why your hair isn’t growing ...
⠀
⠀
Your hair supposedly grows an average of 1.27cm a month, making your total hair growth for the year 15cm.
⠀
You could not be seeing that growth because you aren’t retaining the length ...
⠀
Or because your hair is actually NOT growing.
⠀
This could be due to various reasons, but a few are:
⠀
• Your genes
• Traction Alopecia
• Hormones/Health
⠀
So if nothing truly has worked for you, consider seeing a dermatologist or health professional that might help you figure it out.

The truth is..
⠀
⠀
⠀
You don’t NEED to test your porosity, in order to take care of your hair.
⠀
Porosity, is basically, your hair’s relationship with water. 💧
⠀
When your porosity is high, it means your hair’s got a lot of “holes” in it, thus allowing too much to get in and easily get out.
⠀
When it’s low, it means that your hair is pretty closed up, making it difficult for the water to get in.
⠀
When it’s average, your hair is open enough to let it in and also retain it.
⠀
But bear this in mind, porosity is a spectrum.
You can be very much in between.
⠀
With that being said, you don’t NEED to “test” it in order to use it and take care of your hair.
⠀
If you understand your hair’s needs and are satisfied with the way you care for it then by all means, keep doing that.
⠀
But if you feel like you need help, then testing your porosity might be something you could do.
⠀
It is just a tool, but whether it’ll be useful or not is up to you.
⠀
Has knowing your porosity helped you in any way?

Here’s why the advice did not work ...
⠀
⠀
Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of great resources out there that will truly help you better understand your hair and give you great recipes for DIY products.
⠀
But this one specific recipe did not work for me and now that I know more about my natural hair, I know where it all went wrong.
⠀
The measurements were not for my “hair type.”❌
( I also, at that point didn’t understand what my “hair type” was).
⠀
The honey and cinnamon measurements were too much for my highly porous hair.
⠀
And because of this, the excess cinnamon residue just stayed in my hair for a VERY LONG TIME.
⠀
This lead to the worst tangling I’ve ever experienced in my life.
⠀
Not everything on the internet will work for you, and that’s okay. 🤷🏽♀️
⠀
👉🏾What’s key here is that you listen and understand your hair so that you avoid mishaps in the future.
⠀
(We’ll do a series of posts on how you can “type” or understand your hair’s needs soon so stay tuned ✨)

The one thing I wish was different about my childhood was ..⠀
⠀
⠀
The way we took care of my hair.
⠀
I dreaded sitting between my mother’s legs and having my hair done.⠀
It was painful. ⠀
It was all for the sake of looking pretty.⠀
And it was tiring.⠀
⠀
I spent a good amount of years trying to undo the damage that was done to my hair and my mind. ⠀
⠀
Still a work in progress⠀
⠀
But I hope that the next generations of children of color never have to undo trauma related to their hair. ⠀

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT COULD MAKE OR BREAK YOUR HAIR ..⠀
⠀
⠀
Are your products‼️⠀
⠀
Figuring out which products will/won’t work for you may take some time. 🔎⠀
⠀
⠀
And one problem you might encounter when on this search is dryness. 🏜⠀
⠀
Now, there are various reasons as to why your hair might be dry but our first go-to place when trying to find the cause is your products.⠀
⠀
If your hair is dry even though you moisturize it regularly, then it might be a good idea to look at the ingredients of your day-to-day products (not deep conditioners) and use the process of elimination to see which product might be the cause.⠀
⠀
Everyone’s hair is different so not all products will work for you & sometimes companies change their formulas.
So it’s important to be aware of what ingredients your hair likes or doesn’t like.⠀
⠀
This is not a foolproof method but it’s a good place to start.⠀
⠀
We craft our clients’ products ourselves to avoid these kinds of problems. ⠀
This allows us to have a better understanding of how their hair responds to specific ingredients so we can provide them with what works best for them.⠀

[Scroll to see the After pictures]
We are currently in year 2 of growing out my hair and IT. IS. STRESSFUL 😭 but here’s an update.
[Slide 1 & 2] - 2018/19
The first year was relatively easy. I had a simple routine & simple products.
I had thin, low density, fragile hair.
[Slide 3 & 4] - 2019/20
Year 2 has been a little more complicated.
By little, I mean a lot.
Hair was denser which was great, but also fragile and needed more time and more product.
It was a whole switch up and I had to relearn my hair. It was frustrating but fun at the same time.
Overall, my hair has grown in many ways.
Apart from density, the curls ( I’ll get pictures soon) are more defined and my shrinkage has increased.
We’ve been keeping my hair relatively the same length as we’ve been more focused on it’s density.
So yes, home girl is now medium density 😂
My routines & products are still pretty simple and the amount it takes to do my hair has gotten a bit longer but still under an hour.
The last slide is my humble beginnings 😂
