A survey was conducted to assess users’ perceptions on the safety and efficacy of M-Tonic in helping them with their health problems. The sample comprised 62 men and women aged 23-78 years who had been using the product over a three-year period (2008 -2011). Whereas all the respondents reported of being energised after taking the tonic, none in the survey reported of any side-effects, except one respondent (an academic) who interestingly “complained” that the tonic often made him sleepy when he needed to stay awake and work at night. The results of the study confirmed the manufacturer’s viewpoint that M-Tonic is not a treatment option for any specific ailment or disease. It is a food supplement, and like any food/food supplement, it only helps to promote the general well-being of the human body. The manufacturer therefore does not lay any claim to the health benefits of M-Tonic. The responses were based on perceptions and personal experience, and cannot be compared with scientific clinical trials. That is not to say, however, that perceptions and personal experiences are irrelevant in matters of well-being. Perception is a social reality; personal experience is a lived experience; and both are as much valid and reliable sources of knowledge as other scientific approaches. For safety and efficacy every batch of M-Tonic is laboratory-tested.
