📌START HERE: GAHL 90-Day Length Retention Challenge
📌 By Jan 10: Please check the pinned guides to fully understand the routines.
How to Start:
1. Trim damaged or split ends
This helps prevent breakage and split ends.
2. Length check
For reference only, not comparison(everyone one of us is on their own personal journey. We are not competing) take pictures or measure your stating point.
3. Cleanse & deep condition
• Every 2 weeks
• Weekly if your hair/scalp needs it
4. Moisturize & oil
• Every 2–3 days
• Focus on the ends
• Scalp oiling is optional
5. Protective hairstyles
• Low tension
• Lightweight
• Ends tucked
⚠️ Braids or plaits alone are not automatically protective
6. Night protection
Always sleep with a satin scarf, bonnet, or durag.
7. Always keep hair moisturized
Dry ends break. Moisturized strands retain length.
📌 Reminder: Hair grows at the scalp, but length is kept at the ends.
Consistency is key 90 days, no shortcuts!

📌 GUIDE 7: PROTECTIVE STYLING
What is a Protective Hairstyle❓
A style that:
- Is gentle on your edges
- Hides the ends of your hair
- Allows your hair to grow with minimal manipulation
- Doesn't make you need to take pain killers.
Important❗
Not all hairstyles are protective. Braiding, plaiting, or bunning alone does NOT make a hairstyle protective.
A hairstyle can only be considered protective if it meets ALL the standards below. If it doesn’t, it is just a hairstyle, not protective.
Standards of a Good Protective Hairstyle:
1. Gentle on the hairline
2. Very lightweight, not heavy
3. Ends tucked away from clothing
4. Pain-free, no pain whatsoever
5. Allows washing & moisturizing
6. Not kept too long – max 8 weeks for most styles; mini braids/twists should be redone every 4 weeks to avoid matting
📌 Examples (list not exhaustive and only if all standards are met): remember that just braiding or just plaiting doesn't neccesarily mean it's protective.
1. Braids or twists put up (with or without extensions) if they are let to hang loose, they are not a protective hairstyle just low manipulative.
2. Plaits / Cornrows / Lines
3. Buns (puffs are not protective)
4. Wigs, only if they don’t cause tension
5. Weaves, only if they meet all the above standards
6.flat twists etc......
Challenge goal:
Even in protective styles, a healthy hair care routine should be diligently followed.

📌GUIDE 6: WHEN TO USE SULFATE vs SULFATE-FREE SHAMPOO
Clean hair retains length better.
Buildup blocks moisture but over-cleansing causes dryness.
The key is knowing when to use each.
WHAT SULFATES DO
Sulfates are strong cleansers that:
Remove heavy buildup
Remove excess oils, butters, and silicones
Reset the hair and scalp
They are not bad, they are powerful.
WHEN TO USE A SULFATE SHAMPOO
Use a sulfate shampoo when:
Hair feels coated or heavy
Products stop working
Scalp is itchy or flaky from buildup
Before starting or restarting a routine
After long-term protective styling
1× per month (on average)
📌 Think of sulfates as a “reset wash.”
WHEN TO USE SULFATE-FREE SHAMPOO
Use sulfate-free shampoo when:
Hair is already clean
You wash weekly or bi-weekly
Hair is dry or fragile
You want to maintain moisture
During most weeks of the challenge
📌 Think of sulfate-free as “maintenance cleansing.”
HOW TO BALANCE BOTH (BEST PRACTICE)
Most washes: Sulfate-free shampoo
Occasional reset: Sulfate shampoo (every 3–4 weeks or as needed)
Always follow either with a deep conditioner.
COMMON MISTAKES
Avoiding sulfates completely while hair is coated
Skipping conditioner after cleansing
Conditioning with leave in conditioner after cleansing.
CHALLENGE goal
Clean scalp, clean hair, hydrated hair.
How Do I Identify a Sulfate vs Sulfate-Free Shampoo?
SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate): Very strong and drying.
SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate): Milder, less stripping.
Avoid “Lauryl” it’s harsher.
Look for “Laureth” or no sulfates listed at all.
Sulfate-Free Shampoo Ingredients:
Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Sodium Coco-Sulfate (milder)
Aloe Vera, Glycerin, Panthenol
Plant oils and extracts
Why it may not lather:
Sulfate-free shampoos have gentler cleansers, so the foam is less rich, but they still clean effectively without stripping moisture.
📌 Tip: Always follow with a conditioner to maintain softness and hydration.

📌GUIDE 5: GENTLE HANDLING RULES
Your hair breaks most when it’s rushed or stressed.
Gentle Handling Basics
1. Detangle only when hair is damp or moisturized
Never when Dry.
2. Detangling should not be done daily preferably only on wash day. If you are combing your hair on a daily basis, you will hardly retain length. It causes breakage.
3. Finger detangle first, then use a wide-tooth comb, followed by a detangling brush if needed
4. Always detangle in small sections
Start from ends → work upward.
The ends are not on your scalp. For some reason people confuse edges and ends.
5. Take your time, don't detangle when you are in a hurry!
🚫 Avoid
Dry detangling
Pulling through knots
Styling in a hurry
📌 Reminder: Length is lost through breakage, not lack of growth.
Challenge goal: low manipulation through gentle handling.
