BOER GOAT FARMING
🐐 EDUCATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: BOER GOAT BREEDING
Breed Highlight: Boer goat
Boer goats are one of the most popular meat goat breeds worldwide, known for rapid growth, heavy muscling, and excellent fertility. Here’s a practical breeding guide for farmers:
1️⃣ Selecting Breeding Stock
Choose strong, healthy bucks with wide chests, good legs, and proven growth rates.
Select does with good mothering ability, sound udders, and a history of twins or triplets.
Avoid animals with structural defects or poor weight gain.
2️⃣ Ideal Breeding Age
Does: 8–12 months (at least 60–70% of mature body weight).
Bucks: 8–10 months, but peak performance starts around 12 months.
3️⃣ Heat Signs in Does
Tail wagging frequently
Swollen/red v***a
Clear mucus discharge
Restlessness and mounting behavior
Heat lasts about 24–48 hours.
4️⃣ Gestation & Kidding
Gestation period: 150 days (5 months)
Prepare a clean, dry kidding area.
Most Boer does produce twins, and triplets are common with good nutrition.
5️⃣ Nutrition for Breeding Success
Provide quality pasture or hay.
Supplement with protein and minerals (especially before and after breeding).
Always supply clean water and salt/mineral blocks.
6️⃣ Buck-to-Doe Ratio
1 mature buck can service 25–40 does in a breeding season.
7️⃣ Breeding Systems
Controlled breeding: Planned mating for record keeping and genetic improvement.
Seasonal breeding: Helps synchronize kidding for better management.
Why Focus on Good Breeding?
Proper breeding improves: ✔ Growth rate
✔ Kid survival
✔ Meat quality
✔ Farm profitability
