I am please to be talking at the Arab Health Forum on an Advanced AI system called RETFound which developed by the team at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London led by Prof Pearce Keane. This is a first of its kind AI system that could autonomously diagnose eye conditions. The team are perfecting this AI system to be able to predict the risk of other conditions such as heart disease, Parkinson’s or stroke from a retinal image. Prof Pearce Keane and his team published the result of their work in one of the top journal in the World, Nature. Here is the link to the article:

Age related macular degeneration is a chronic eye condition that results in center vision blurriness or blind spots. The macula is typically affected by blood vessels that release fluid or blood. When you have keratoconus, the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped front of your eye, progressively becomes thinner and bulges outward into a cone shape. Hyperopia (long-sightedness) occurs when the eyeball is short. As a result parallel rays of light come into focus behind the retina when the eye is in an unaccommodated state. In younger people with long-sightedness, the lens is still flexible and is able to change its shape to accommodate and focus the rays of light on to the retina, providing clear vision without glasses. This however exposes the eye to stress due to the need for constant use of the eye muscle (accommodation), sometimes leading to eye fatigue and headaches. As the natural lens stiffens with age, patients with long-sightedness are no longer able to accommodate and become more dependent on glasses or contact lenses. Patients with hyperopia wear convex (plus) lenses which makes the light rays to converge and hence focus on the retina rather than behind it.

Chronic eye rubbing over time damages the cornea by creating microscopic scratches, which together cause significant harm. A scratched cornea may first make your eyes wet, make them red, and make them sensitive to light. The cornea may become infected or develop scar tissue if the damage worsens.
