Story time…What is Gulah?What does Gulah Mean? Why Gulah?

Meet the inspo for Gulah and my uncle Abduraghmaan “Boeta” Vollenhoven. He was kind, selfless and always positive no matter what life threw his way. A great and dear father figure to many, including myself, who taught such valuable lessons which always set me and my siblings up for success morally, spiritually and mentally. Sadly he passed while suffering from COVID-19 on 7 August 2021.

When I was a toddler, my mom always used to style my long, curly hair in a “bolla” (hair bun). I struggled to say “bolla” and ended up calling it a gulah. From that moment on till he sadly passed, my uncle always called me Gulah.

As a Muslim, natural curly girl, I love bonnets to protect my curls while sleeping, turbans for a funky way of covering my hair and under caps for hijabs. I struggled to find a good bonnet/turban lined with curl protecting fabrics which won’t cost an arm and a leg. I also wanted raise funds to assist in continuing the funding of charities close to my uncle’s heart. Hailing from a family of tailors and sought after wedding dressmakers, I decided to use these hereditary skills and make my own.

Gulah was then born. Our bonnets come with a detachable band which converts the bonnet into a head wrap/turban which can be worn out whilst running your errands without the need to remove the bonnet. Our hijab caps are also silk-satin lined to protect your tresses whilst wearing hijabs made of fabrics not so friendly to the hair.

Proceeds of every item sold will go into funding the charities my uncle loved and supported in South Africa.
