Nova Untold
Chapter six :The Message
Nova checked her phone in the hallway. The hallway had the same golden light, but a different kind of dread. They had made it exactly fourteen steps down the hallway — Nova had counted, out of habit, out of the same quiet instinct that made her catalogue exits and clock faces — when her phone vibrated in her pocket. She almost didn't look. She was still carrying the strange, fragile lightness of having told the truth, still adjusting to the unfamiliar weight of it, like a coat she'd worn so long in one shape that putting it on differently felt foreign. Jade was saying something beside her about the art room and the freshman Delia and whether Mr. Hartwell would actually do anything, and Nova was halfway listening the way you listen to rain when you're warm inside. Then she looked at the screen. It wasn't from Maya. It wasn't from her mother. It was from a number she didn't recognize — no name, no area code she knew — and the message was four words long. I know what happened. Nova stopped walking. The hallway moved around her — students brushing past, somebody's locker slamming three doors down, the distant squeal of a PE whistle from outside — and she stood in the middle of it completely still, reading those four words again. Then again. "Nova?" Jade had noticed. She was looking at the phone over Nova's shoulder before Nova could think to turn the screen away. "Who's that?" "I don't know," Nova said. And that was the truth. But the cold spreading through her chest told a different story — because whoever it was, they hadn't said I heard what happened, or I know what they're saying. They had said I know what happened. Present tense. Specific. The kind of words that only mean something if they're true.
