"The new outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is causing an important pandemic affecting a large number of people all-over the world.

𝙑𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣 𝘿 is a hormone precursor produced by our own body with the help of sunlight which has an important role on adaptive immunity and cellular differentiation, maturation and proliferation of several immune cells.

Vitamin D is more like a hormone than a vitamin. It’s synthesised in the body from cholesterol and because it works more like a hormone and its receptors are found in every human cell, the effects of vitamin D are varied and substantial.

Vitamin D has also been shown to be essential in the proper absorption of calcium, bone development, growth control, proper immune function, improved male and female fertility and neonatal outcomes as well are substantially reducing the incidence of colorectal, breast and other forms of cancer.

The message is clear: Maintaining a healthy amount of sun exposure, and/or vitamin D levels in your body, is critical for optimising your chances of conceiving and giving birth to a healthy baby.

Exposure to sunlight boosts fertility in both men and women. According to the European Journal of Endocrinology, adequate vitamin D levels boost endogenous progesterone and estrogen production, which regulates the menstrual cycle and improves the likelihood of successful conception.

For women, maintaining the right amount of vitamin D increases the chance of success through IVF, as well as reduces the symptomology of endometriosis and polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS).

Interestingly, in polycystic o***y syndrome women, low vitamin D levels are associated with obesity, metabolic and endocrine disturbances and vitamin D supplementation might improve menstrual frequency and metabolic disturbances in those women.

Another study found that although vitamin D-deficient female rats were capable of reproduction, their fertility was reduced by an astounding 75 per cent; litter sizes diminished by 30 per cent and impaired neonatal growth was increased.

In men, vitamin D is essential for the healthy development of the nucleus of the s***m cell. It has also been shown to increase testosterone levels which help to improve semen quality and count.

While exposing your skin to sunlight is the best way to absorb vitamin D, it can also be obtained through some foods.

Another option is taking a high-quality vitamin D supplement . The most important thing to keep in mind if you opt for oral supplementation is that you only want to supplement with natural vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), which is the type your body is able to adequately use and process. Do not use the synthetic and highly inferior vitamin D2.

Research suggests the average adult needs to take 8000 IU’s of vitamin D per day in order to elevate their levels above 40 ng/ml or 100 nmol/l, which is the minimum for disease prevention. The optimal level of vitamin D is 50-65 ng/ml or 100-140 nmol/l.

Maintaining optimal vitamin D levels during pregnancy is also important in keeping mothers and their new babies healthy. US researchers found that, among other things,

mothers who took high levels of vitamin D during pregnancy had their risk of premature birth reduced by half
premature babies born to women taking high doses of vitamin D were reduced by half at both 32 and 37 weeks
fewer babies who were born “small for dates”
women taking high doses of vitamin D had a 25 per cent reduction in infections, particularly respiratory infections such as colds and flu, as well as fewer infections of the va**na and the gums
babies getting the highest amounts of vitamin D after birth had fewer colds and less eczema
