Congratulations to West High student Sophie Lange on her Iowa High School Music Association's vocal performance award recognition from the Solo & Ensemble Music Festival. Lange received an "Outstanding Performance" designation.

Sophie Lange, a soprano soloist and 10th grader at Waterloo West High School, received the distinguished Outstanding Performance award for her center at the 2023 Solo & Ensemble Music Festival. She is the first Waterloo West student to receive an Outstanding Performance award since 2017. She is invited to perform at the IHSMA Outstanding Performance Recital at Iowa State University in Ames, IA on Tuesday, May 16.

" The 'Outstanding Performance Award' is a designation of effort and accomplishment that far exceeds the demands made of an average Iowa high school musician. This state is blessed with hundreds of talented musicians that are capable of musical performances of a superior nature. Such performances are awarded our Division I rating at festival programs. To be granted the “Outstanding Performance Award”, however, designates this particular performance as being truly exemplary to other high school students and music programs." - Alan S. Greiner, IHSMA Executive Director.

Lange's vocal performance included, "Shenandoah," by Jay Althouse, and the arietta, "Se tu m’ami, se sospiri" by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

Lange is accompanied by her grandmother, Rev. Carol Nelson Teare, a 1974 graduate of West High School and Minister of Music and Pastor at First Baptist Church of Waterloo. Her parents are Rye and Anne Lange. Sophie plays percussion in the West High Band and is the lead snare drummer in the West High Wahawk Marching Band. She is active in her church's youth group, and sings in the Celebration Choir under the direction of Rev. Carol Teare, at First Baptist Church. She loves theatre performance and has been cast in 10 shows at the Waterloo Community Playhouse/Black Hawk Children's Theatre, the most recent roles being "Olive" in Little Miss Sunshine the Musical; (2021) and "Gingy" in Shrek the Musical; (2022).
