Enterotoxemia (Pulpy Kidney Disease) in Sheep

Enterotoxemia is a serious and often fatal disease of sheep caused by toxins produced by Clostridium perfringens type D. It commonly affects fast-growing lambs and sheep consuming high-energy diets.

Clinical Signs

• Sudden death
• Loss of appetite
• Depression
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea (sometimes)
• Nervous signs (staggering, convulsions)
• Grinding of teeth

Prevention

✔ Vaccinate sheep regularly.
✔ Avoid sudden changes to high-grain diets.
✔ Introduce concentrate feeds gradually.
✔ Provide good-quality roughage and clean water.

Treatment

Treatment is often unsuccessful because the disease progresses rapidly. Early veterinary intervention may include:
• Clostridial antitoxin
• Antibiotics
• Fluid therapy
• Supportive care

Early vaccination is the most effective way to prevent enterotoxemia.

Rabies is a fatal viral disease that attacks the nervous system of mammals. Clinical signs vary by species but commonly include:
Behavioral changes (unusual aggression or unusual tameness)
Excessive salivation (drooling or foaming at the mouth)
Difficulty swallowing
Loss of appetite
Restlessness and anxiety
Abnormal vocalization
Biting at objects, other animals, or people
Staggering, incoordination, or weakness
Progressive paralysis (often starting in the hind limbs)
Seizures (sometimes)
Coma followed by death
Clinical Signs in Cattle
Sudden decrease in milk production
Excessive salivation
Difficulty swallowing
Bellowing or abnormal vocalization
Aggression or unusual excitement
Hind-limb weakness progressing to paralysis
Death within a few days after clinical signs appear
Important Note
Rabies is zoonotic, meaning it can spread from infected animals to humans, usually through bites or saliva entering broken skin or mucous membranes. There is no effective treatment once clinical signs appear. Immediate isolation of the animal and notification of veterinary authorities are essential. Vaccination remains the most effective method of prevention.
