The proper way of designing a place, actually the basic rule, is to set a focal point; which is important in every small or big room. It could be a sofa, painting, sculpture, fireplace.. etc.

In the room you are trying to design, arrange your furniture around that focal point. Put your biggest piece of furniture first, like the sofa, and then continue with the smaller pieces of furniture down till you reach your aspirations..
