Eid Mubarak to our Muslim Sheikhas and Sheikhs 🌙 x

Happy Ghanaian Independence Day to all my sistess and bradez 🇬🇭

It’s a very strange time in the world right now but particularly here in the UAE. I’m trying to keep things as normal as possible at home so that means I’ll be eating jollof rice and blasting highlife all day.

I hope you’re all safe and sound and that if things go left, you have another place else in the world - that you call home - that you can return to.

Remember there are 250+ Sheikhas in our WhatsApp group who are just a message away. Reach out whenever you need us x

Hydrating the hair may be harder when you are not drinking water throughout the day; here are some tips.

Prioritise Hydration (Between Iftar & Suhoor)
Even though you’re not drinking during fasting hours, you can:

🌙 Sip water consistently between Iftar and Suhoor rather than drinking a large amount at once (aim for 6–8 glasses minimum in that window)

🌙 Eat water-rich foods: cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, soups.

🌙 Include healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, nuts) to support scalp and hair health.

🌙 Make sure you get enough protein (eggs, lentils, beans, fish)

🌙 Avoid excessive caffeine (tea/coffee) as it can increase dehydration.

2016. What a year. A defining moment in my Afro hair journey.

Coco Chanel once said “a woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” There are no truer words spoken. I was done relaxing my hair (by myself) and waiting for the burn 🔥 before washing it out (can’t believe we collectively did that and thought nothing of it for 20+ years!).

In 2016 on the last day of school, I took myself down to a barbershop on Mansfield Road in Nottingham. I had just left my full time job as an English teacher in an inner-city school, a job I loved, to embark on a new journey overseas. A month later, I would hop on a flight to Abu Dhabi 🇦🇪

Little did I know unemployment was waiting for me as well as a rude awakening that barbershops in the UAE were not unisex! I now had plenty of time on my hands to learn how to grow freshly shaven Afro hair.

The rest is history.

Fast forward to October 2025, my loc journey has begun. I wish I had started them sooner. Can’t wait to see what they looks like 10 years from now.

What was your hair like in 2016? Drop some images in our WhatsApp group (link in bio!). I’m tryna see sumn…

Loc’d In AD: one of my favourite events to date. As a newly Loc’d babe, I loved being able to walk into a room filled with people who looked like me and whom I could learn so much from.

We heard each others Loc origin stories, gleaned wisdom from Tvoke (everybody’s favourite loctician) and learned from each other’s personal experience. All over rum punch and jerk chicken whilst listening to music from the islands. Chef’s kiss 💋

We’re gonna do it all again but this time in DXB. Who’s coming?

Still buzzing from our Sipnpaint event last Friday.
Ruth and I had been planning this collaboration for years and I’m so glad we finally managed to do it. So the term ‘trust the process’ is layered - bringing an idea to fruition takes time in the same way that creating an artistic masterpiece does. But it all comes together, beauty is created.

The same is true of our natural hair journeys. Good things take time and energy and effort and adaptation. Hang in there. Trust the process. The result will be spectacular.
