Women are not a biological niche!​​​​​​​​

Most neuroscience research (animals + humans) is male-dominated (the subjects, not the scientists!!). e.g. a 2020 review (Mamlouk et al) found only 5% of research was exclusively in females vs 26% in males. ​​​​​​​​

So why does most brain research generally neglect to accurately study biological females? ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
One good historical reason is safety. If women fall pregnant during a drug trial, there is potential for harming the unborn baby.🤰​​​​​​​​

A (less good) reason is that females complicate data gathering. Cyclical reproductive hormones make our female biology more fickle than males. The menstrual cycle was once likened to "a pesky sort of feature essentially of the female, an unnecessary source of additional variability and one wisest to avoid."🩸​​​​​​​​

Sadly, we've realised s*x bias in research has compromised women's health. Biological females are at a greater risk of experiencing delays, & misunderstandings during diagnosis & treatment. It's important + interesting to consider periods, the pill, pregnancy & perimenopause when considering disease risk, drug therapy & mental health. ⚠️​​​​​​​​

The good news is academic journals & research funding bodies are now raising the bar on their requirements for reporting of s*x as a biological variable (SABV) + s*x differences. 📊​​​​​​​​

We're still playing catchup! No matter the cost or added complexity, scientific research should be for everyone & apply to everyone. 👩‍🔬​​​​​​​​
