You might have seen cupping done before and wondered what it actually is or how it helps your muscles. Well wonder no more because we are here to answer all your questions!
Myofascial cupping is used to treat soft tissue injuries, relieve muscle tension and increase range of motion. It creates a vacuum effect that lifts up the tissues including the fascia, muscles and blood. It can be applied to most parts of the body and is safe to be performed on most individuals.
Cupping can be used by gliding the cups along the skin or by leaving the cup in one spot for a few minutes.
You will sometimes see some reddish circles on the surface of the skin after treatment has been applied. This is due capillary rupture and dilation which we try to keep to a minimum.

How does Myofascial Dry Needling work?
Dry needling is the process of inserting a fine needle into the skin through muscle tissue. Needling targets the trigger points (sore spots) within the muscle. Dry needling has been shown to decrease pain, increase range of motion and decrease muscle tone. Sometimes dry needling may result in a twitch response which is an involuntary spinal reflex. Twitches are helpful when needling as they are a sign that the trigger point is being released.
Stimulating the trigger point with a needle helps to draw a normal blood supply back to flush out the area and release tension.

Have you ever had a muscle cramp and wondered why they happen? 🤔
Characterised by a sudden shortening of a muscle, cramps can be very painful and hard to stop but are not usually harmful long term.
Some causes include:
👉 Loss of fluids
👉 Insufficient blood flow
👉 Nerve compression
👉 Mineral depletion (potassium, calcium, magnesium)
👉 Over exertion during exercise
👉 Certain medications
👉 Holding a position or stretch for too long
Your Myotherapist can often help identify reasons you might be getting certain cramps, particularly if they are occurring regularly. Let us know about any frequent cramping at your next consultation!

What is carpal tunnel syndrome? 🧐 Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterised by a numbness or tingling in the hand and forearm caused by a compressed median nerve in the wrist. It can cause night pain and is made worse with repetitive flexion and extension of the wrist. Often it will get worse over time if left untreated and it can cause permanent dysfunction of the hand, including loss of sensation in the fingers or weakness.
Common causes include repetitive hand movement, pregnancy, swelling, activities that involve prolonged flexion or extension of the wrist as well as some other health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Some treatments that can help include:
🌱Wearing a splint while sleeping
🌱Exercises to mobilise the joints
🌱Steroid injection in the carpal tunnel
🌱Gentle massage to keep joint mobile
🌱Dry needling

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique that helps to promote natural movement of lymphatic fluid around the body. It helps the system to more efficiently remove metabolic waste and toxins from the body.
When do we use MLD?
🌱Post surgery
🌱During pregnancy
🌱When excess swelling is present
🌱Lymphoedema
🌱Rheumatoid arthritis
What to expect from an MLD consultation
We usually recommend a minimum of 45 minutes per consult as this technique is more beneficial with the more time it is applied for. We first apply a medium pressure to stimulate the lymph nodes and then we use light pressure techniques to help move the lymphatic fluid around the limb towards the lymph nodes.

The lymphatic system is part of the immune system and its main function is to keep body fluids balanced, plus protecting the body against infection.
When not working properly, the lymphatic system can cause swelling called lymphoedema as well as increasing the likelihood of other disorders and infections.
Lymph nodes filter the fluid that travels through the body. They are found all over the body in areas such as the armpits, throat, chest, abdomen and groin. Their main function is infection defence which is why they usually swell when you have an infection.
It’s important to consider the health of your lymphatic system to ensure general health and well-being.
