Let’s talk about apprentices.

Somewhere along the way our industry got cynical. we stopped taking them on. too much time, too much money, too much risk what if we train them and they leave?

But here’s the thing: someone took a chance on me. someone took a chance on every single person who’s good at this job. if we all stop opening the door, where does the next generation of hairdressers actually come from?

I’ve taken on a lot of apprentices, and this isn’t a go me post it’s a please, let’s not lose this post. when you pour into people, it comes back. maybe not always how you expect, but it does.

I complain about being tired all the time. and honestly? I think most business owners do.

Balance is the thing we all talk about and none of us have fully figured out. for me it looks like a gym session before work, or knowing when to put my phone down, or grabbing the little moments where I can.
the tiredness is real, but so is the love for what we do.

So to every business owner out there giving it a good go, I have so much respect for you. these things are hard. and we’re all just trying our best 🤍

By early mornings and late nights, full columns and quiet seasons, big lessons and a lot of resilience. We are lucky to have a salon like this. That’s real. But so is the work. So is the heart. But leadership isn’t what most people think it is.

It’s not about being in control, it’s about taking responsibility. For everything.

It’s fixing problems you didn’t create.
It’s making decisions no one else wants to make.
It’s putting your team first, over and over again.

One minute you’re dealing with a fringe that was cut too short or a toning formula that’s mysteriously gone missing… The next, you’re navigating things completely out of your control, like your salon flooding, the council tearing up your street, or having to pull out of big opportunities because of it.

And in between all of that, you’re asking yourself:
Did I handle that well?
Was I too hard on them?
Is everyone okay?
Am I okay?

These are the thoughts no one really talks about.
Business owner thoughts.

It’s a lot. But if you’re going to lead, you have to do it selflessly. Because it will always be more about everyone else than it is about you.

And somehow… you still show up and do it anyway.
