Hey guys, I haven't posted in here or the group for a while, I had extensive, risky eye surgery 5 weeks ago & I'm still in recovery.
But today I saw someone selling Enhydro crystal, these crystals have always drawn me to them. So I thought I would do a little post on what I've learnt over the years of Enhydro's.

A lot of people believe that all enhydro crystals contain water that is a million years old or more. Unfortunately this is not always the case. There are different Enhydro crystals, technically some are Enhydro others are fluid inclusions.
The ones that are technically fluid inclusions are the ones that have million + year old water inside them.

ENHYDRO- these are the agate forms, geodes & nodules, that have water & air bubbles trapped inside of them. These geodes are porous meaning water can exit & enter, although at a very slow rate.
Therefore the water inside one of these may not be all that old. Water may seep into these over many, many years meaning that the water inside these may not be the water that was present in them when they formed.
This also means that these geodes can also actually dry out over time being that the water can seep in & seep out.
If you see Enhydro crystals at a gem show & they are sitting in buckets of water, they're probably doing this because these are the ones that can lose water.

I only discovered this when I came across my enhydro crystal that I've had for probably 20 - 25 years or so. You can imagine my disappointment when I went to look for the water bubble and it was not there any more. I completely freaked out thinking I have just lost precious water that is over a million years old!! 🤦‍♀️😆So I decided to do a little research on Enhydros.
My little one now gets a bit of a soak in water every now & then to try & bring back the water bubble, this has worked to a very small extent as of course it probably needs many, many years to get back it's full water capacity.

FLUID INCLUSIONS - These are usually Quartz. Fluid inclusions are formed at the same time as the crystal, & should be in little to no danger of evaporating, unless damage was done to the crystal when it was excavated.
Meaning the fluid inside is as old as the crystal.
When a crystal is growing, the different faces & sides of a crystal can grow at different rates, so tiny pits can occur in the crystal, & the crystal will continue to grow over these, enclosing them & creating the chamber for the bubble in which to form. The hot, silica rich ground water in which these crystals are growing, then cools inside the chamber & contracts, reducing in size & shrinks, pulling away from the walls of it’s tiny chamber & creating a vapour bubble, which is what we can see moving when we shake the crystal.
Although Quartz varieties are the most well known crystal for fluid inclusions, they can occur in a variety of other crystals - Selenite, Halite, Fluorite, Aquamarine and many more. These fluid inclusions are not always water, they can also contain carbon, oil, liquid CO2 and more.

Well I learned something new today. There is Pink Fluorite & Black Fluorite. I thought the pink colourings were just coming from the purples. And when it is so dark it's black, I thought it was just really dark dense purple.

AMETHYST, CITRINE, AMETRINE AND SMOKY QUARTZ.

Did you know that *all Citrine was once an Amethyst? The only chemical difference between Amethyst & Citrine is the oxidized state of the iron impurities.
Naturally occurring Citrine is quite rare, because it is the result of natural heat & pressure applied to Amethyst over a very long period of time.
Most Citrine in the marketplace today is actually Amethyst that has been exposed to extreme temperatures & pressure in a controlled environment.

Although Ametrine is formed naturally (combination of both Amethyst & Citrine), Ametrine can also be formed in the same way Citrine is formed from Amethyst. Citrine that has been created from heat-treated Amethyst can be turned back to its original purple color by bombarding it with beta radiation, which reverses the oxidation state of the iron that caused the color change.

* Although, Man-made Citrine is also sometimes produced from heat treating Smoky Quartz.

So the big question -
How do you tell the difference between natural Citrine formed in the ground or Man made heat treated Amethyst?
Generally, if you see stones in the shape or color pattern of amethyst, or if they are unnaturally orange or yellow, or if they're yellow at the tip with white bases, they are probably Amethyst. Also if they have an "ombre" color & fade from dark yellow/orange, to light, to clear/white in the same piece, it is probably lab heat treated amethyst. It doesn't matter if it's in points, clusters, or small tumbled stones: if it exhibits these traits, it's probably heat-treated Amethyst.
