Updated: the universe is clearly telling me something. The PET scan machine was giving them grief this morning so there will be no glowing today for me.
I have been postponed until next Tuesday😢😂
Words of Wisdom with Waz on Wednesday
Today is Radioactive Day... I mean PET Scan Day 😄
This morning I'll be hanging out with a group of fellow radioactive people while having my PET scan.
For those who haven't had one before (ah, me included 😄), a PET scan involves being injected with a very small amount of radioactive tracer before the scan takes place.
The amount of radiation is considered low and the medical benefits of the scan generally outweigh the risks.
The reason for my scan is to determine whether my prostate cancer is confined to the prostate or whether it has spread elsewhere in my body.
All very sensible.
All very logical.
And yet...
At the end of the appointment they tell you to avoid close contact with pregnant women and small children for a period of time afterwards.
Now I understand the reason.
Pregnant women and young children are more sensitive to radiation, so the precautions are simply there to minimise unnecessary exposure.
Makes perfect sense.
But isn't it interesting how two things can be true at the same time?
We can understand something intellectually...
and still have questions emotionally.
We can understand the logic...
and still feel a little uncomfortable.
I think that's true for a lot of things in healthcare.
Surgery.
Medications.
X-rays.
MRIs.
And now, apparently, PET scans 😄
It's interesting how certain words can change our perception of risk.
Mention an MRI and most people don't think much of it.
Mention a "radioactive tracer" and suddenly it feels very different.
It's funny how our minds work sometimes.
Most of us make decisions every day by balancing risk versus reward.
We gather the information available to us, ask questions, weigh up the options, and then make the best decision we can.
Not because we're guaranteed an outcome...
but because it's the best decision we can make with the information we have today.
So today I'll be trusting the science, having my scan, and trying not to glow in the dark afterwards.
If you see a strange green light coming from Brisbane this evening...
you'll know everything went according to plan 😆

Global Wellness Day with Waz
Today is Global Wellness Day, celebrated each year on the second Saturday of June.
Founded in 2012, Global Wellness Day was created with a simple but powerful belief:
"One day can change your whole life."
The aim is to encourage people everywhere to pause and make wellness a priority, not just today, but every day.
In 2026, Global Wellness Day celebrates its 15th anniversary.
The theme for Global Wellness Day 2026 is:
A reminder that joy is not just a nice feeling.
Joy can be part of our wellbeing.
It can be found in simple everyday choices, small moments of gratitude, time with people we care about, movement, rest, laughter, nature and looking after ourselves a little better.
As many of you know, wellness has become very important to me over the past few years.
After three heart stents in 2023, having a melanoma removed, and now navigating a prostate cancer diagnosis, I've learned that wellness isn't about perfection.
It's about the small choices we make every day.
That's why my approach is simple:
* Eat Well
* Move Well
* Think Well
* Sleep Well
Today I'd like to invite you to take the Wellness with Waz 4 Pillars Challenge.
Choose just ONE action from each pillar today:
Eat Well -
Drink more water, add an extra serve of vegetables, or enjoy a meal that helps your body feel nourished.
Move Well -
Take a walk, stretch, dance to a favourite song, or spend 15 minutes being active.
Think Well -
Practice gratitude, read something inspiring, laugh, or spend a few quiet minutes reflecting on something good in your life.
Sleep Well -
Aim for an earlier night, reduce screen time before bed, or create a calming bedtime routine.
Small actions repeated consistently can create remarkable change over time.
Wellness isn't built in a day.
It's built through the small choices we make every day.
Perhaps Global Wellness Day is the perfect opportunity to make one of those choices and bring a little more joy into your life.

Words of Wisdom with Waz on Wednesday
Today I'm going to get a little philosophical on you.
I must have spent too much time in my own head while enjoying my inner-city river walks this past week.
A thought-provoking quote popped up in my Facebook feed yesterday and it immediately resonated with me because it touched on several themes I've written about recently.
Themes like uncertainty, setbacks, missed opportunities, trust, and making peace with things we can't control.
It said:
"If you miss the bus, maybe you avoided the accident."
"If you got rejected, maybe you were saved from the wrong place."
"If they left, maybe they made room for who is coming."
"The Universe protects you in ways that look like bad luck at first. Trust the detour."
Now whether you believe in God, the Universe, fate, coincidence, or simply the randomness of life.., I think there's something worth reflecting on here.
The Rolling Stones said it so eloquently way back in 1969:
"You can't always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes,
Well, you might find,
You get what you need."
Have you ever wanted something so badly that you were devastated when it didn't happen?
A job.
A relationship.
A business opportunity.
A promotion.
A particular outcome.
And then, with the benefit of hindsight, realised that not getting what you wanted may have led you somewhere better.
As I reflected on those words, it made me wonder...
Can you look back over your own life and think of things that never went according to plan?
Things you didn't expect.
Things you didn't ask for.
Perhaps even things you didn't want at the time.
And yet somehow, with the benefit of hindsight, they became some of the most important moments of your life.
Maybe they arrived through missed opportunities.
Wrong turns.
Setbacks.
Disappointments.
Or unexpected detours.
And that's why I've learned not to judge every disappointment too quickly.
Because sometimes the detour is taking you exactly where you need to go, even if you can't see it yet.

Words of Wisdom with Waz on Wednesday
Healthy habits reduce risk, but do they guarantee health?
The short answer is no, but they’re probably a pretty good place to start.
Just like my tagline says:
Eat, Move, Think & Sleep Well.
I genuinely believe these are some of the foundational basics for giving yourself the best chance at a longer, healthier life.
But health is bigger than just food and exercise.
Things like purpose, connection, financial stress, emotional wellbeing, and maintaining strong social relationships all play an important role too.
And while all of these things make sense, here’s something I’ve been reflecting on lately.
What about the people who appear to do everything right, and still get sick?
You see it all the time.
The fit person who has a heart attack.
The healthy eater diagnosed with cancer.
The active older person developing dementia.
And then on the flip side, you have someone who smoked, drank, ate poorly, never exercised… and somehow lived to 95.
It can make you stop and wonder:
“What’s the point of trying so hard if there are no guarantees?”
Most of you will already know a little about my recent health challenges.
Santa brought me three heart stents for Christmas in 2023, I had a melanoma removed in 2025, and now I’m dealing with prostate cancer.
And like many people, I’ve spent time reflecting and wondering:
“Could I have done things differently?”
Maybe.
Maybe not.
The truth is, while I thought I was doing reasonably well with my health, upon reflection, clearly there were areas I could have improved.
I was carrying extra weight, particularly around my stomach, which we know isn’t ideal.
I was moving, but not consistently enough.
My sleep certainly wasn’t always where it needed to be either.
And while I was trying to make better choices overall, I probably wasn’t as disciplined or consistent as I could have been.
So have these things contributed to my current health challenges?
Possibly.
But regardless, I still believe doing the basics well gives us the best chance possible.
None of us are getting out of here alive anyway 😄
So personally, I’d rather stack the odds in my favour where I can.
It won’t always be perfect, but it will be what works for me.
Because I also believe life still needs to be lived and enjoyed along the way.
I’d rather feel stronger, move better, think clearer, sleep deeper, and give myself the best chance possible to enjoy the years I do have.
Because health is not just about adding years to your life…
it’s also about adding life to your years.
Because if we’re going to live longer, we may as well give ourselves the best chance to live well too.
I’d much rather spend my later years still moving, thinking, experiencing life, and making memories, rather than simply existing.
