Nothing cooler than a dramatic sky!

Captured during Anthony and Amanda’s real wedding day. I spotted the Gold Coast Meter Maids nearby and immediately saw the image in my head, so I asked if they’d be up for it. They jumped in without hesitation.

It’s a little cheeky, but Anthony and Amanda have the kind of personalities that made it work perfectly. Their expressions say it all.

This image was captured in 2012. Every now and again I go back through my archives and revisit older work. I look for the images I’m still drawn to years later and try to work out what they all have in common.

Because I photograph weddings, my goal isn’t only that people enjoy working with me. I’m also always trying to understand what gives an image a longer life. What makes it still feel good years later.

With this image, the main thing I notice is that by 2012 I’d started to find a better balance in the tonal range. There’s a little more dynamic range in the frame, but not so much that it turns into that obvious HDR look. There’s a fine line there. If it’s handled carefully it can give the image a slightly more painterly feel rather than looking over-processed.

That said, I actually don’t edit images this heavily anymore. Over time I’ve found that while massaging the tones can make an image look very appealing, the images that tend to last the longest are usually the cleanest ones. The ones where there’s no obvious human intervention and the image just feels natural. I still really love it though!
