Why do I have hyperpigmentation?
As a summary, hyperpigmentation is a result of the overproduction of the melanin (pigment) within the skin. It can be caused by many factors, including hormonal changes, solar and pollution damage, medication and the after effects of acne and skin inflammation.
It's also important to note that melanin is not the enemy. Melanin is vital for protecting our skin from harmful UV rays but it’s the overproduction of this pigment that’s the problem.

How do I treat it?
Skincare-wise, solar protection is key. Protecting your skin from harsh UVA/B and HEV blue light that causes sun damage, sunspots and lethal melanoma is essential. I always recommend high levels of mineral zinc oxide as a broad-spectrum physical solar protector. Zinc oxide also has the added bonus of being a natural anti-inflammatory and is way less likely to cause skin irritation compared to ‘chemical’ sunscreens.
