π¦ 6 common myths about hypermobility disorders β busted.
Hypermobility is so much more than being "flexible." Conditions like Hypermobile EDS (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) can affect multiple body systems and impact daily life in ways that often go unseen.
From chronic pain, fatigue and dizziness to joint instability, GI symptoms and nervous system involvement, these conditions are complex, real and frequently misunderstood.
Many people spend years seeking answers because symptoms can be invisible, scans may appear normal, and awareness remains limited. But early recognition, appropriate management and informed healthcare can make a significant difference.
Key takeaways:
β
Hypermobility disorders are not just about flexibility
β
They are likely underdiagnosed, not rare
β
Normal tests don't always mean normal function
β
Pain is multifactorial and complex
β
Rehabilitation should be individualised
β
While there is no cure, effective management can improve quality of life
Awareness leads to understanding, validation and better care.

Focus on Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis syndrome occurs when a small muscle deep in the buttock irritates the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttock and sometimes down the leg.
Common symptoms:
β’ Deep buttock pain or burning
β’ Pain with sitting or driving
β’ Tingling or numbness down the leg
β’ Pain when walking, running, or climbing stairs
What can cause it?
Muscle weakness, hip stiffness, prolonged sitting, or increased activity can all contribute.
How physio can help:
Physiotherapy can reduce pain, improve mobility, strengthen surrounding muscles, and address the underlying cause to help prevent it returning.

Struggling to keep up with your home exercises? Youβre not alone π
Your home exercise program is one of the most important parts of your recovery β but finding the time (and motivation) can be tough. Here are a few simple ways to stay on track:
βοΈ Plan it in
Treat your exercises like an appointment β schedule them into your day so they donβt get missed.
βοΈ Focus on what matters most
Short on time? Ask your physio to prioritise your exercises so youβre still getting the biggest benefit.
βοΈ Use daily habits as reminders
Link your exercises to things you already do β like brushing your teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil.
βοΈ Make it rewarding
Pair your exercises with something you enjoy or reward yourself after β small wins make a big difference.
Consistency is key π The more regularly you complete your exercises, the better your results.
