Bonnie
"The little boy in this photo is my son Jack… He passed away 3 years ago when he was hit by a van whilst crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing.
It’s one of those things you never expect to happen to you. I would see a story like this on the 6 o’clock news and think, “Oh that poor child, oh their poor parents!” Then all of a sudden, it was our story…
We were visiting one of my friends in Blackburn. Jack had gone for a walk with his little sister, Steph, and my friends daughter to the shops. There was only one road they had to cross to get there but that was the road where Jack would lose his life. A man was driving a van, got distracted and didn’t see the kids crossing the pedestrian crossing. The two girls managed to run off the road and were just missed by the van. Jack wasn’t so lucky.
The young teenage girl that Jack was with had to run into someone’s house to call her mum. We rushed down to the scene and found Jack lying on the road.
The ambulance rushed Jack to hospital… for the next 24 hours I was by Jack’s bedside, telling him he had to fight! He had to live… then the doctors came to me. I don’t remember exactly what they said but I know I didn’t like it.
“Jack’s not going to make it.”
I told them they were wrong! To “Get back in there and do more!”
Then I realised, they were right…
I sat with Jack and whispered to him, “If you don’t want to fight anymore… it’s ok. Apparently you might see a light and a tunnel soon. If you see that and want to walk down that tunnel, you go Jack. We love you.”
Not long after I said that to him, Jack passed away.
But, in between the time that we knew he was going to go and when he passed, someone came up to me and asked if we would consent to Jack being an organ donor. There was no hesitation. I knew my darling Jack would want to help as many people as possible, he was such a generous and caring soul.
10 of Jack’s organs are now in other people. There are two different people out there right now seeing through Jack’s eyes. His heart is pumping blood right now in someone else’s chest.
I can’t tell you how much that knowing Jack has helped others live makes us proud. Nothing can ever ease the pain of losing Jack, but the pride we feel is immense.
Our little boy who didn’t get a chance to live a full life is now helping total strangers live theirs. He has helped so many families have that extra time with their loved ones and that is just so special.
After Jack passed, we were told things about our son we didn’t really know. We always knew he was a kind and generous soul, but parents from school would approach us and tell us stories about how Jack had sat with their child at lunchtime when he saw that they weren’t feeling the best or how he had befriended the new kid at school when they were trying to find their feet. We heard about how our compassionate little boy had had an amazing effect on so many lives in his 10 years with us.
I am asking you all today to sign up as an organ donor. To have that chat with your loved ones. If you’re ever on the fence about it, ask yourself this... “If any of my family members ever needed an organ to live, would I take it?” If the answer is yes, then you have to become a donor."
A massive thank you to Bonnie for sharing this story about Jack. I broke down in tears writing it.
Please share this story far and wide.
This week is Donate Life Week.
