It’s not really the most popular time of year for this right now, but over summer I get lots of requests for waterproof fibreglass casts for managing wrist fractures (in both kids and adults). I can apply and remove casts in the clinic during a standard appointment.

I am fortunate enough to work along side to assist clients following their hand, wrist and elbow surgery. Part of my role as an accredited hand therapist is wound care and suture removal. It is so satisfying to see the steady recovery that clients make week by week following their postoperative plans.

So many of my clients have sadly injured themselves at work. As an accredited hand therapist I pride myself on assisting them to manage both their injury and their safe, successful return to work.

Accredited hand therapists can expertly assess your injury and direct you in the best course of action to speed your recovery. In your assessment we may take measures of your flexibility and strength, as well as specific tests to give you a thorough diagnosis and management plan.

Scars and wound management are another area of expertise for accredited hand therapists. We can advise you on techniques and products to reduce your visual scarring, minimise scar sensitivity and tightness.

Did you know that hand therapists have specialist training in the fabrication of custom thermoplastic splints. These sturdy, comfortable and practical splints can be fitted for targeted immobilisation or protection of your injury allowing you to shower and continue to use your hand for daily tasks as you recover.

Accredited hand therapists (as awarded by the AHTA) are AHPRA registered occupational therapists or physiotherapists with demonstrated advanced competence in hand therapy. They have undertaken > 300 hours of training education, assessment and mentorship and > 3,600 hours in clinical hand therapy practice.
