A New U
A New U is about making making positive changes to your health in a fun and friendly environment. We will motivate and inspire you to be a New U.
I went to a seminar on herbal medicine on Saturday evening and theNaturopath was telling us about the 'Doctrine of Signatures'.
Very interesting.
It idea is that nature has a way of shaping food into which organ that food is beneficial for. Eg: walnut is high in Omega 3 which is good for brain - and its shaped like a brain.
The tomato has 4 chambers and its high in lycopine which is great for the heart.
Carrot when cut in half, looks like an eye. It's high in beta carotene which is good for vision.'
Very interesting- confirms that you are what you eat
Week 22: haven't lost any more kilos but have lost 3cm on each of my thighs. They've definitely gotten firmer so that's great.
Have lost more cms in my b***s as well - have to do something about forming them
Up!!!
Week 20: nothing, nothing, nothing this week. Started off well early in the week but don't know what happened- seem to be a bit stuck on 72kgs.
Doing exercise everyday - mainly gym but walking as well.
Anyway we'll see how I go this week. Must say it's been sonics this summer to wear shorts and bathers and not feel self conscious

If you are like me and get eaten by mosquitoes, try this - rub lemon juice on the bite to stop itch
Anyone got any ideas on how to get 'Human Biology' terminology etc into your brain!!!
I have never studied Human Biology before - other than briefly in year 6 and 7 and struggling on trying to remember the vast number of different cell /tissue types, hormones, processes etc.
YouTube though has been wonderful- found a channel called Crash course and they are great at explaining.
Will just have to watch over and over again - and double my Omega 3!!

Josephine ( my oldest daughter) has now joined the gym and will be having PT sessions twice a week to get stronger. Liz was very upset that she is too young to join - she'll have to wait 2 years - though she does more activity than the rest of us combined!!!
Anyway I found this recipe for a smoothie to fight sunburn!!!
Apparently certain foods act like a sunscreen (who knew) - green tea contains catechin antioxidants that enhance DNA repair etc
Anyway it looks interesting and tasty
Sun shake:
Blend 1 cup of ice with 1 cup frozen mango, 1/2 cup coconut milk, 1/2 cup chilled green tea, 1 TBs protein powder, 1 tbs chia seeds, 1 tps fresh ginger and 2 carrots
Sounds good but don't think I'd dispense with sunscreen
Week 19: ( not really but lost count on number of weeks)
Am 1kg off goal weight - yehhh!!!! But my waistline is still not down to 80cm yet so will keep on going until I lose those last 3cm.
BMI is now ok - 24.5
Have lost quite a few cm's on my boons last couple of weeks - 3cm.
Just not losing anything in my hips.
Anyway proud of myself

5 reasons not to drink plastic bottled water from the supermarket:
- plastic bottles are made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) that can leach chemicals and hormone disrupters into the water. Did you know that bottled water has a use by date not because of the water but because of the degradation of the
Plastic containers.
Those large water containers that you get in commercial premises are just as bad.
And the degradation is exacerbated by age and heat
- harmful Bacteria in water. Both American and Canadian studies found high levels of potentially dangerous bacteria in bottled water - 1/3 of those tested.
- poor quality. Unless the water is spring water, it is just municipal water that has had additional filtering.
- environmental issues - the waste from plastic bottles (plastic in general) is an environmental disaster
- cost - bottled water is extremely expensive.
It's much better from a health, environmental and cost perspective to get a really good water filter. I fill up glass bottles and put them
In the fridge for my kids to drink. They know immediately now if it's ordinary tap water because of the smell
of chlorine in tap water.
The ESpring filter uses a carbon block filter and uv light to remove chlorine, any metals and microorganisms to give you great tasting water. Plus saves
me fortune in bottled water.

I decided to make my own veggie stock yesterday- what you'll do when you have the day off.
Turned into chicken and veggie stock because I had a BBQ chicken carcass in the fridge.
Very easy - roasted chicken bones and some veggies - onion, tomato, celery, capsicum and garlic in olive oil.
Once roasted, chucked everything into pot with thyme and Bay leaves and peppercorns.
Covered with filtered water and cooked for 1 hour.
Will freeze and use next time I make soup.
Great way to use up veggie scraps

I made this mix of nuts and seeds yesterday because I wanted to use up some of the many bags of nuts and seeds that I have in the pantry.
It's a mix of walnuts, macadamia nuts, coconut flakes, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, almonds and sesame seeds.
Put in on my desk at work to nibble on when peckish

I finished my first Maths test last night in 32 years!!!!!!
And I did reasonably well - 76%. Quite proud of myself.
It's part of one of the enabling courses before I start my degree. Now I'm onto Human Biology - something in haven't studied since I was 12 - so should be interesting
