Hey there! I’m still alive, in case you were wondering 🙋‍♀️
There’s been a lot going on behind the scenes here at Franki&Co, and I’ve decided I need to add a bit more of the Co into the Franki!

What does that mean? 🧐
It means I can’t do this on my own any more, and that’s exciting and scary all at the same time!
Phase 2 of Franki will come with a facelift for the Universal Balm, with the packaging being a lot more user friendly for open water swimmers and a funky new label designed by 🙌

I want to give the hugest shout out to my swim family and their tribe for giving me the confidence to keep going when I started 2 years ago! With you all being my human testers, when the chafing from your swimmers’ straps and wetsuit was hectic, the Universal Balm was born 🥰

Stay tuned 🌈💧🌿

Busting the Myth that Sunscreen causes Vitamin D deficiency ☄️

I have had chats with a few people lately who are concerned about Vitamin D deficiency as a result of wearing sunscreen everyday. We thought it prudent to bust this myth for you all.

Studies have NEVER found that everyday sunscreen use leads to vitamin D insufficiency. In fact, people who use sunscreen daily can maintain their vitamin D levels.

High-SPF sunscreens are designed to filter out most of the sun’s UVB radiation, since UVB damage is the major cause of sunburn and can lead to skin cancers. UVB wavelengths happen to be the specific wavelengths that trigger vitamin D production in the skin. Nonetheless, clinical studies have never found that everyday sunscreen use leads to vitamin D insufficiency. In fact, the prevailing studies show that people who use sunscreen daily can maintain their vitamin D levels.

One of the explanations for this may be that no matter how much sunscreen you use or how high the SPF, some of the sun’s UV rays reach your skin. An SPF 15 sunscreen filters out 93 percent of UVB rays, SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent, and SPF 50 filters out 98 percent. This leaves anywhere from 2 to 7 percent of solar UVB reaching your skin, even with high-SPF sunscreens. And that’s if you use them perfectly.

The truth is, it doesn’t take much sun exposure for the body to produce vitamin D. Even committed proponents of unprotected sun exposure recommend NO MORE than 10 to 15 minutes of unprotected exposure to arms, legs, abdomen and back, 2 to 3 times a week, followed by good sun protection. That minor amount of exposure produces all the vitamin D your body can muster. After that, your body automatically starts to dispose of vitamin D to avoid an overload of the vitamin, at which point your sun exposure is giving you nothing but sun damage without any of the presumed benefit.

So in summary, after 10-15 minutes outside, make sure you are slapping on some Avo Zinc, protective clothing, a hat & sunnies to ensure you are not doing any permanent damage to your skin cells DNA that could eventually lead to skin cancer.
