You service your car every year. When was the last time you serviced your brain?

If your car started making a strange noise, you’d book it in sooner. If your phone battery suddenly dropped to 20% by lunchtime, you’d notice.

When it comes to the organ that controls your memory, decision-making, mood, sleep, focus and future - the strongest thing you can do is pay attention early. Many men ignore the warning lights.

Brain fog.
Poor sleep.
Difficulty concentrating.
Mood changes.

These are often brushed off as stress, ageing, working too hard, or “just life.” Sometimes they are. Sometimes they’re not.

Dementia is now the second leading cause of death for Australian men, yet too many wait until a major problem develops before seeking help.

The reality is that brain health isn’t something you think about when you’re old. It’s something you protect while you’re healthy.

This Men’s Health Week, consider this your reminder to check under the hood. Please share.

Researchers can’t say poor oral health causes dementia - YET! But the association has now been observed repeatedly across multiple studies for almost a decade now.

A growing body of trusted research has linked gum disease and tooth loss with cognitive decline, dementia and even structural changes seen on brain imaging.

The exact reason remains unclear, but inflammation and oral bacteria are the leading suspects.

😬🦷🪥TIP:
Brushing at least twice daily and regular professional dental cleaning associated with lower dementia risk.

We’re incredibly encouraged by what we’re seeing in clinic, but it’s impossible to celebrate these advances without acknowledging the patients who desperately want access and simply cannot afford it.

Cost remains the single greatest barrier to treatment. That’s devastating to patients, their families and their clinicians.

The science is moving forward. Access isn’t, and price should never leave patients behind.

We continue to advocate for a
for the groundbreaking disease modifying drugs and for the treatment of early in Australia.

Cognitive decline and dementia can challenge independence, alter routines and create uncertainty for individuals and families.

Power is not always found in control.

Sometimes it’s found in seeking answers.
In asking for help.
In showing up to appointments.
In making small changes that support brain health.
In caring for someone you love.
In refusing to give up hope.

And often, the most powerful moments are found in the simplest acts of care, patience and understanding.

Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, often starting in the 40s or 50s. This decline is linked to changes in learning, memory, and spatial cognition.

In men, low testosterone levels are linked to poorer memory performance and higher dementia risk.

In women, research is limited, but studies suggest testosterone may support verbal memory and cognitive performance, especially
postmenopause.

Researchers are increasingly interested in what this hormone decline means for memory, learning and cognitive function.

What makes this area so interesting is how many unanswered questions remain.

Most testosterone research has focused on men, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of how this hormone influences the female brain.

Researchers are now exploring whether maintaining healthy hormone levels may play a role in supporting cognitive health as we age.

The relationship between testosterone and brain health is complex and individual.

While testosterone replacement therapy may offer benefits for some people, it is not a universal solution and more research is needed to fully understand who may benefit and why.

One thing is clear:

When we talk about brain health, hormones deserve a seat at the table!

Most people think they’re seeing a dietitian for weight loss. They’re not.

This isn’t a meal plan appointment. It’s a brain health appointment. And we’re not here to take away your favourite foods!

We’ll take the time to understand the bigger picture:

🧠 Your brain health concerns
🧠 Your medical history and medications
🧠 Your eating patterns and lifestyle
🧠 Your cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors
🧠 Your personal goals

There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

Our focus is helping you make realistic, sustainable changes that support both your current health and your long-term cognitive wellbeing.

Research continues to show that what we eat can influence many of the factors linked to brain health, including blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes risk, inflammation and vascular health.

Protecting your brain isn’t about a single superfood. It’s about building habits that support it for decades.

On top of advanced MRI and PET imaging, our patients now have access to NeuroQuant® – an AI-powered tool that can provide additional insights into brain health .imaging

So what does that mean?

A standard MRI allows us to look at the structure of the brain. NeuroQuant takes this a step further by using artificial intelligence to measure the volume of different brain regions with remarkable precision.

Why is this important?

🧠 It can help identify patterns of brain volume loss that may be associated with neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

🧠 It allows comparison with large databases of people of the same age and s*x.

🧠 It provides objective measurements that can help support clinical assessment.

🧠 It can assist in monitoring changes over time.

NeuroQuant is not a diagnosis in itself. Rather, it is one piece of the puzzle that may complement a comprehensive assessment, which can include your symptoms, cognitive testing, blood tests, MRI scans and, where appropriate, advanced PET imaging.

As technology continues to evolve, cutting-edge tools such as NeuroQuant are helping clinicians gain a more detailed understanding of brain health and cognitive decline.

At The Healthy Brain and Memory Centre and CRT Imaging, we’re committed to ensuring our patients have access to the latest evidence-based diagnostic technologies available.
