The dermis is much thicker at 1.5-4mm and is what provides skin with its plump and bouncy feel, strength, flexibility, cushioning as well as holding most of the bodies water. Comprised of collagen and elastin this is the primary target for clinical treatments to increase renewal and improve the signs of aging which includes thinning of the dermis, volume loss, vascular malformations and also wrinkling of the skin.

In addition to targeting the dermis with clinical treatments very few skin products have the ability to target this layer. Smarter technology and product “delivery” systems aid in the penetrative abilities of ingredients such as vitamin a, c and e to promote improvement in collagen and elastin quality as well as re-increase the thickness which naturally thins with time.

Have you heard this name before?

Coenzyme Q10 features in many skincare brands, particularly drugstore creams and lotions AND can be readily found in oral supplements and vitamins aimed at improving cardiovascular - heart and blood vessel health.
It is siimilar to other pseudovitamin compounds in the fact that it is vital for survival, but does not necessarily need to be taken as a supplement.

However, there is a potential for deficiency due to suffering a heart attack, taking statins, various disease states, and aging.

So what is i? and why is it popular in skincare?

Let's talk Telangiectasias!

Telangiectasias often referred to by patients as "broken capillaries" or "spider veins" are small dilated vessels found beneath the skin and form gradually often over time and often in clusters.
They stem from deeper vessel structures and appear as a result of weakening of the thin vessel walls losing their elasticity meaning they are unable to perform their normal expansion and contraction duties! They become overwhelmed and often "burst" sprout off unnecessarily.
Vessels are important as they deliver vital nutrients via blood flow, oxygen and hormones to the skin however these unsightly little friends have gone rogue and are no longer promoting that function.

They can arise from many causes such as trauma to the area, aging, environmental damage, genetics and in some cases can be secondary to a deeper underlying disease. The exact cause of telangiectasia is unknown however some people are more at risk of developing telangiectasia than others. This includes those who:
work outdoors
sit or stand all day
misuse of alcohol
are pregnant
are older or elderly

Lastly, telangiectases are more likely to form as skin ages, have rosacea, scleroderma, dermatomyositis, or systemic lupus erythematosus, use corticosteroids.
