Did you know that high sugar diets can cause skin ageing? The process is called Glycation.

Glycation is a process where the sugars in the blood stream bind to collagen and elastin proteins within our skin and form a damaging end product called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE’s). AGE’s cause flexible proteins (collagen and elastin) to become ridged and brittle causing deep set lines, wrinkles, irregular texture and inflammation.

This process starts from a young age but doesn’t usually show signs in the skin until 30 plus. Once the AGE’s have attached to proteins there is no natural processes to rid the body of them.

It is worth noting that glycation is also a natural process of ageing and we will all have some glycation degradation in our skins. We just want to limit it as much as possible.

Things we can do to limit the effects of Glycation

-Eat a healthy wholefood diet high in protein low in refined sugars

-Drink 2 litres of water daily

-Use high quality antioxidant rich skincare
