The history of Arquebuse Water

Centuries ago the “Water of Life” was made from flowers and herbs by healing monks for the protection and nourishment of the skin.

The convent of St. Anton’s was founded by Gaston the lord of Dauphiné, on June 28 1095. Gaston was given the mission to prevent or inhibit the “will-o’-the-wisp of age,” it also was called St. Anthon’s fire. R. P François Goujon lived around 1634 and he was the house chief of the Little St. Anton’s Friary in Paris and the last abbot of St. Anton’s community of faith in Vienna. We can be grateful for him as he archived the recipe of the herbal extracts, which was found in the archives of the community of faith.

Several versions exist about the origin of the recipe described in 1634.The most likely version derives from the beginning of the XVI century. The French king Francis I. commissioned the healing monks to produce a potent plant extract against the damages caused by a firearm called Arquebusade (in other words harquebus or heavy musket). Several monasteries also began to develop a plant extract.
