Seshat was the ancient Egyptian goddess of writing, wisdom and knowledge. She was seen as a scribe and record keeper; her name translating to "female scribe".

She also became identified as the goddess of accounting, architecture, astronomy, astrology, building, mathematics, and surveying as well as being ‘she who is foremost in the house of books’: the patroness of temple libraries and other collections of texts.

The goddess is known from as early as the 2nd Dynasty (c. 2890 – c. 2686 BC) when she is attested assisting King Khasekhemwy in the ‘stretching the cord’ ceremony, as Seshat was also the ‘mistress of builders’ and it was she who established the ground plan of every sacred structure.

She was depicted as a woman draped in leopard skin to symbolise her power over, and protection from danger, as leopards were a common predator.

Also present was a seven-pointed emblem above her head. It is unclear what this emblem represents.
However, it bears a striking resemblance to the leaves of h**p which was widely used for medicinal and industrial purposes i.e. making cords for measuring building plans.

Some historians suggest it was a papyrus leaf, from which paper was made to scribe information.
