Ok I feel like ranting today. I'm not usually a hothead but lately a particular topic has really been grinding my gears.

WTF is with the whole "vegan, organic, 573-free" crap that's now becoming a marketing tactic for gel companies. SMH. I can't tell you how many emails I get asking about whether a certain gel brand is chemical-free.

Let's break it down...

Vegan is not the same thing as Cruelty-Free. I have no idea why people are now using Vegan to describe gel products. This is really dumb. Of course gel is vegan! Gel doesn't have animal by-products in it. It's made of photoinitiators and re-mixed semi-solid monomers and oligomers that are hardened to polymers when exposed to UV-A light. None of these chemicals are animal derived. In a nut shell gel is plastic! Also I have never heard of any modern nail company testing their products on animals. If you have let me know and we will put a stop to that together lickety split.

Secondly all chemicals are organic so making the statement that gels are organic is also really dumb. Plastics and pigments in gels are made up of carbon and carbon is organic, therefore gel is organic. But everything is made up of carbon so don't buy into this crap. You are made up of carbon so now you can go around telling people you're organic! Lol.

You can thank the lovely Prop 65 in California for starting the whole craze about chemical free beauty products. Yes I agree people should know what they are buying/eating/putting on their bodies but this has really gotten out of control. Especially the whole 3-free, 5-free, everything-free wave. This is originally related to nail polish. It's very rare to find a nail polish that actually does contain formaldehyde anymore. This was a popular thing in the 70s but since then the regulations on beauty products are so strict that the amounts of Toluene, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, and Camphor (the actual 5 chemicals mentioned in 5-free statements) are present in such small amounts in MOST nail polish that they are considered insignificant.

But still people freak about chemicals in beauty products because god forbid we expose ourselves to things that might cause cancer (like eating McDonald's, va**ng, consuming sugar, smoking, drinking, driving our car, chewing gum, breathing air, and living). News flash everything causes cancer. I have yet to find a gel that contains these ingredients anyway (read your MSDS and google the ingredients). Plus gel and acrylic products are plastic so if you have any issues with chemicals I would assume you wouldn't want to do nails period regardless of how they're labeled. So if you want to be super safe and not expose yourself to chemicals how about not doing nails at all!

It makes me laugh when I see gel companies saying things like 5-free, organic, vegan, and cures in the sun! Of course it cures in the sun. The sun emits UV-A rays and that gel you're putting on is still chemicals that form a plastic which has to be exposed to UV light to harden.

I don't know about you but I'd rather educate myself about my choices, take some calculated risks, drink a freaking Diet Coke in the sunshine while marveling at my gorgeous chemical-based nail enhancements without worrying about dying cause guess what we all are dying...we just don't know how quickly or slowly. So why not live it up within reason? Educate and moderate is my motto and I choose my products because of their real qualities not their empty claim-based marketing ploys.
