👉🏼Do you know the story of the "Black Swan," Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield?

Born into slavery sometime between 1818-1826 in Natchez, Mississippi, Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield had little reason to dream of the life that would eventually become her own. Because of a series of unlikely circumstances and her own relentless efforts she would eventually become known as the first African American singer to gain recognition in both Europe and the United States.

Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield was called "the Black Swan" because of the elegance of her voice and grace of her presence. Born a slave in Natchez, MS, she was freed when her mistress joined the Society of Friends, which was anti-slavery.

Elizabeth began studying music in 1846 and in 1854, she became the first African American singer to perform for Britain's royal family.

She passed away in 1876.
