Keep an eye on your horses for stomach issues such as ulcers with this unseasonable grass growth we've had.

Gut issues can present as behavioural changes, biting at the stomach area, increased sensitivity to touch/grooming/saddling up, and changes to their faecal matter.

I'm Bec, and I am a fully qualified equine sports massage therapist, human physiotherapist, and zoologist. I've owned and ridden horses both competitively and for pleasure for over 35 years. I have worked as an equine massage therapist for several years and have learned from some of the top animal physiotherapists in Australia and New Zealand during my human physiotherapy placements.

After several years away from equine massage to focus on human physiotherapy and research science in zoology, I've re-opened my books so I can get back to doing what I love!

My equine massage sessions may include: movement and physical assessment of your horse, hands-on massage therapy (injury prevention, rehabilitation, physical maintenance), red light therapy, stretches, home exercise programs, education and advice.

I've been a bit quiet here, as 2024 sprung a very unexpected spinal surgery on me in January (and no, the reason for the surgery had absolutely nothing to do with horses!).

Everything went great with the surgery, and I've been recovering well - it's just a slow process.

I'm itching to get back out treating your beautiful horses, so I will be back providing equine massage from April (which is only a few weeks away!).

Last week, my boys had their annual vet checks, including teeth and vaccinations. I'm a stickler for keeping on top of everything health wise with the horses. Like with people, prevention is better (and cheaper!) than cure.

It was literally bucketing down with torrential flooding rain here in Melbourne (no joke - this was last Monday, so if you're from Melbourne, you'll know!).

So it was the first time the horses had been inside the barn, so we could be dry (I've only had them at this agistment property a few months, so haven't had time to set up a lot of plans I have). The barn was (is) FULL of junk from the property owner. So I did a mad dash 'dodgy' clean up/ move everything as safely to the sides as I could before bringing the boys inside to desensitise them before the vet came.

They had about 90 minutes tied inside to get used to it.

Tyson (pinto) took 5 minutes to chill (he's that kinda horse).

Dusty (brown) is a sensitive stresshead soul...so he took longer. A LOT longer.

In the past, they've done a lot of training like this when we were training for a big packsaddling trek. So I know they were capable.

And my vet even commented on how super well behaved they were. ❤️ And the sedative for doing their teeth sure helped too.🤣

Would you believe it now: every day I go to check them, they want to go back in the barn?! 🙄 They are such special cherubs. So they now often have a little supervised explorations in the barn while I'm there if we have time.

When my back (which is unfortunately rendering me out of action at the moment) recovers, I have some plans to rearrange and set the barn up better so they can have access. Whoever built the barn was either not horsey or didn't design it to accommodate horses, as for one thing, the doors are not safe to leave open (they dont even fully open 🤔). But I have some ideas to 'Macgyver' it... 😉🐎🐎

We enjoyed a detour past the dam at the end of our little ride around the paddock today. They have so much fun splashing and rolling in the dam. Dusty knows he can't roll while under saddle but makes up for it with VERY enthusiastic spashing. As you can see, Tyson has no shame and loves a full-body mud bath roll (we all stank of dam water by the end, but it's worth ot for the joy it brings us all). 🤣🐷🐴🐴💦

This is my other horse, Tyson. Another percheron cross. He's a complete sweetheart (and if we're being honest, quite the simpleton 🤣). Love him to bits. He's pretty much just a big puppy dog.

This is my Dusty. He's a 15hh Percheron cross. He looks about 17hh here only because I'm on the down slope (I'm 5'9", so not short!).
