Fresh Air Therapy - Try It!!
Trying to keep up with the demands of life can feel like a losing battle. Technology was meant to serve us and make our lives easier. Instead we’ve become slaves to the ‘pings” of our phones and email, with expectation of instant response or we’re judged for not being “there”. As the speed of technology gets faster our own pace of life is getting faster too! Days, weeks, and months pass like a blur and life spent spinning on the hamster wheel is not a great place to be.
So how do we get off the wheel and reclaim our quality of life?
The first step is to realise that we are not extensions of technology. Our nervous systems are not “wired” for the same speeds as the internet. We are of nature. We may see ourselves as “advanced” and dominating life forms on the planet, but we are of nature just the same. And so as the earth has a natural pulse and rhythm so do we. When we move out of sync with our natural pace and rhythm we come agitated, stressed, and when pushed to our limits, aggressive. This affects our relationships with others and undermines our sense of self. We can end up feeling: “This is not who I am or the person I want to be - stuck in this cycle of unending busyness and not coping.”
Everyone has their own natural rhythm and the pace that is unique to them and their nervous system. Hence as the pace of life increases we need to be aware of our need to rebalance our nervous systems and come back into alignment with our natural rhythm and pace. The best, easiest and cheapest way to do this is to go outside into the natural environment. By spending twenty minutes a day in nature, going for a walk or even just sitting outside, breathing the fresh air, hearing the birds, enjoying the sunlight though the trees and feeling the peace, you will settle your nervous system, bring your emotions back into alignment, clear the mind so you make better decisions and by connecting into the “grid” of nature get a top up of energy into your system. And when we feel we are running on empty this is a great bonus!
We intuitively know when we’re upset we need go for a walk to clear the head. By making this a part of your normal life practice you give yourself a psychic break off the hamster wheel and have a rest from the daily momentum, start to “feel” and make better decisions.
If you think you don’t have time to do this remember how easy it is to waste 20 minutes going through emails or checking your phone with no real benefit to your quality of life!! :)
