Did you know that ruby and sapphire are actually the same mineral? Both belong to the corundum family, but only the rich red variety is called a ruby. Its captivating colour comes from tiny traces of chromium, which give this precious gemstone its unmistakable fiery glow.
Every other colour of gem-quality corundum—from blue and yellow to green and pink—is classified as sapphire.
So where does pink sapphire end and ruby begin? That's one of gemmology's most fascinating debates. Most experts agree that a true ruby should display a medium to medium-dark red tone, but there is no universally accepted boundary between a pink sapphire and a ruby. Nature doesn't always fit neatly into categories, making every gemstone beautifully unique.
