Your skin is an extremely clever organ, in fact it stems from the same cell embryologically as the brain and has similar mechanics in that it can synthesis its own hormones. One we are all familiar with is the stress hormone cortisol; the skin will synthesis cortisol in an attempt to reduce inflammation and communicates directly to the brain, known as the skin-brain axis.

So, how to know when your skin needs a change? Simply listen by observing.

As seasons change so too does the atmosphere we live in and our skin either adapts or communicates through a stress response that can appear as ultra-dry, sensitised, inflamed or irritated. When your skin shows you it is having a challenging time adapting to the seasonal changes it can be helpful to tweak your regime to reduce the skins stress response. This doesn’t mean a complete overhaul of your skin care but simple adjustments like incorporating oil-based cleansers, reducing exfoliation, switching up your retinoids and adding in oil balms, particularly if your skin becomes dehydrated and sensitised during seasonal changes
Remember, it’s seasonal so it won’t last forever, however not addressing the skins needs during stressful times will only exacerbate the condition.

Listen, we understand the appeal of having moisturiser with SPF in it, it sure is a convenient thought having a one-step routine in the morning. However, when it comes to sun protection in Australia it is vital that we place this life saving step above all else and finish our regime with a broad-spectrum SPF. It’s also vital that SPF has a minimum sun protection factor of 30 and is reapplied every 2 hours. Let’s be honest who wants to re-apply a moisturiser every 2 hours in their day?

Moisturisers are for hydrating and nourishing the skin and sunblock and sunscreen is for protecting the skin from UVA and UVB rays. They should not be combined and used as your go-to SPF as the extra ingredients within a moisturiser can dilute the SPF.

A dedicated SPF of 30 or 50 that is formulated for re-application either over the top of makeup or easy to use in the day offers far greater chances of sun protection, not to mention re-application as our moisturisers generally stay in the bathroom and aren’t a product we carry around with us.

They (skin-fluencers) say that serums and hydrators absorb into the skin better when applied to damp skin and they’re not wrong… The missing piece of this puzzle, however, is that a well hydrated skin is actually what allows for enhanced absorption and most importantly cell communication. Picture it like this: if you put a dry sponge into a bucket of water it will need a lot of manipulation (squeezing) to absorb the water. On the flip side, putting a wet sponge into a bucket of water will evenly and gradually sink into the bucket absorbing the water into its already damp fibers.

The skin is much the same, hence the trend of applying products to damp skin; the possibility for confusion comes from each person’s idea of ‘damp’ skin differing so much from the other. Here’s what you need to know:

So, with this we say go forth and micellar or mist your skin between applying and layering your correctors and hydrators for maximum absorption, just make sure your skin is not soaking wet: slightly damp and hydrated is key here.
