Desperate times…. 😂
Rosacea isn’t just “sensitive skin” it’s a complex skin condition where the skin becomes more reactive and easily triggered.
It often shows up as persistent redness, flushing, visible capillaries, and skin that feels hot, tight or easily irritated.
The blood vessels in the skin become more reactive, meaning they dilate and don’t constrict as easily. This is why redness can flare up and linger.
At the same time, the skin’s nerve endings become more sensitive. There are specific heat receptors in the skin called TRPV1 receptors, and in rosacea-prone skin these are overactive.
So triggers like heat, spicy food, alcohol, high histamine foods, incorrect skincare, can send stronger signals than they should, leading to flushing, warmth and even burning hot sensation.
In addition to that the skin is usually in a constant low level of inflammation with a weakened barrier. This means it reacts faster and takes longer to calm down.
Imbalances in the gut microbiome and increased internal inflammation can play a role in how the skin behaves. When the gut isn’t functioning optimally, it can contribute to systemic inflammation as well as an imbalanced microbiome within the gut and the skin!
The liver is also key, as it’s responsible for processing and clearing hormones, toxins and inflammatory byproducts. If detoxification pathways are sluggish, this can place extra load on the body and contribute to skin reactivity and flare ups.
If your skin is constantly reactive, flushed or just very unpredictable, it’s not random your skin is crying out for support with a holistic approach.
But for real 😧 us busy gals are all booking out in advance now, we recommend rebooking your next appointment before you 📓🤍
PSA 📣 Your Lymphatic system has a huge influence on how clear your skin is and this is why Lymphatic stimulation is an integral part of how we treat/heal .
If your lymphatic system is stagnant with blocked flow this will show up in your skin as congestion as well as inflamed breakouts, dull/textured skin as well as slow healing (post inflammatory erythema) and even dark circles!
Hehe jk we love sharing 😍
Those little bumps around your mouth aren’t always acne.
What is Peri-Oral Dermatitis?
Peri-oral dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that presents as small red papules that may sting, burn, or feel itchy, often accompanied by dryness and flaking. It most commonly appears around the mouth and nasolabial folds, but can also extend to the nostrils, eye area, and forehead.
What causes Peri-Oral Dermatitis?
Peri-oral dermatitis is a multifactorial condition. It is often linked to impaired skin barrier function and a dysregulated microbiome, alongside internal and external triggers such as stress, poor gut health, a weakened immune response, and hormonal fluctuations.
What should you avoid if you have Peri-Oral Dermatitis?
Topical triggers include whitening toothpastes containing SLS and fluoride, heavy occlusive balms and creams, particularly those containing essential oils and synthetic fragrances, steroid creams, and active skincare such as retinoids and physical or chemical exfoliants.
Lifestyle factors that may exacerbate the condition include high histamine foods, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, excessive sweating, saunas and steam rooms, hot showers, hot water exposure on the face, and elevated stress levels.
How to support healing:
Management should focus on restoring barrier integrity and rebalancing the skin and gut microbiome. This may include supporting gut health, implementing strategies for nervous system regulation, and following a low histamine diet where appropriate.
A period of zero therapy can be beneficial. This involves temporarily removing active skincare and, in some cases, minimising all products to allow the skin barrier and microbiome to reset and repair. After this phase, products are slowly and intentionally reintroduced, focusing on microbiome-supportive formulations such as Prologic Probiome Serum.
Medical Grade NIR LED therapy will also assist in reducing inflammation, calming the immune system and supporting skin repair. Consistency and patience are key when managing peri-oral dermatitis.
