Did you join our Avoidable Deaths Network highlighting the issue of avoidable burn injuries and avoidable burn deaths across the globe presented by five experts from five continents? 🌏 If not, please read the summary made by Kristina Stiles RN MSc 🇱🇻 🇬🇧:
💡 Danielle Antonellis Kindling: 95% of all fire related deaths occur in low-and middle-income countries, where gaps and duplication in humanitarian actions, lack of cross-sector collaboration, impaired access to healthcare and first aid results in injuries and fatalities from fire and burns for those who live in vulnerable conditions. The invisible shackles, such as social determinants of health, as well as physiological and psychological vulnerabilities, directly impact how vulnerable communities experience a fire and are able to access healthcare.
💡 Tanveer Ahmed: burn incidence is starting to compete for most prevalent burn mechanism leading to injury and deaths for population of Dhaka, affecting mainly young people and upper limbs as a result of work related incident (70%) or high voltage (60%). The burden of survival is displayed in contractures or amputations. "No amputation. No reconstruction. What we need is ."
💡 shobha chamania: pressure stoves, kerosene cookers, saris around open flames and unplanned electric wiring as the greatest fire and burns risks to India population. Some fantastic engineering designs have seen successes in drastically reducing fire and burns incidence, such as introduction of solar and LED lights as replacement for kerosene lamps, and play pens for children to reduce and fire risk around ground-level cooking areas. "Knowledge is not easily converted into safe practice", so to be effective prevention strategies must include all mediums, be active, repetitive, and local to remote areas, and be inclusive of resources and training.
💡 Jonathan Bayuo: "burn guidelines are not well known to the public" in Ghana, who are often the untrained bystanders and first responders who care for burn casualties with "good intent". Inappropriate initial treatment and poor prehospital care affects the trajectory of burn care process - resulting in painful wound cleansing to remove bystander's "first aid" (eg eggs, soy sauce, toothpaste, charcoal, gentian violet, engine oil), increased use of prophylactic antibiotics, increased potential for developing avoidable complications and disabilities, increased length of hospital stay (and associated high costs), and death.
💡 Ziphilly Sichinga: Malawi has the highest burn mortality in Africa (22%), with burns responsible for 4.4% of all injuries, with 70% of all burns presenting in children. There is no national burn policy, which results in little or no burn prevention, poor first aid and delayed presentation.
