Let's talk Prototyping...
Prototyping is an essential process before bringing a product to market as our Small Business Project Students are finding out. A product idea might look like the snazziest product on earth and you can already see the Euros pouring in by the bucket... but...once you get to bring your product idea into the physical world in the form of your first prototype you quickly might find it does not work so well as you first envisioned or you learn you picked the wrong material. Prototyping not only helps prevent mistakes and disappointments but also may spark newer or better ideas regarding your design. Plus... bringing along your prototype to a manufacturer will help relay the correct information about how you want your snazzy product to look like :)

Lets talk about the why behind 3d printing?... Ohh I dunno... Just because it's cool 😎. FYI...It does not always need to be a class project... We love welcoming people in the studio who learn about 3D printing tech by exploring how to print a 20 cm tall Doom figurine 😜

Wowie, would love to get my hand on one of these if/when it goes into production.

How Groot is Groot?
Let's talk: 3D printing time

The little Groot stands 10cm tall en took 6 hours to print, Groot 2 is 20cm tall and took 18 hours, Groot 3 is 30cm tall... can you guess how long he needed to print?

Depending on the size and intricacy of your object 3D printing can take anywhere from 30 minutes for a simple key chain to 30 hours for a big Groot. Just something to keep in mind when you reserve a 3D printer at the KdG Fablab.

No need to be affiliated with KdG... EVERYONE is welcome to play with our machines on Wednesdays & Thursdays.
Send an email to [email protected] for opening hours and let us know how we can help you.

Let's talk: Ideation and experimentation
With websites like Thingiverse, you don't need to be able to draw in 2D or 3D, plenty of ideas to be found with 3D files generously included. But it does not always look or work out the way you need it to so there is a need for redesign and experimentation.

Luckily team FabLab Mark & Esther, are here to help with their extensive knowledge of mediums and machines for your Ideation, re-redesign of your Art project, Entrepreneurial Ideas... or just cause you wanna make something wicked cool 😉.

No need to be affiliated with KdG... EVERYONE is welcome to play with our machines such as 3D Printers & Laser cutters/engravers. Send an email to [email protected] and let us know how we can help you.

Lets talk lasers....
We have been experimenting with engraving skate decks with the FabLab BRM90130 laser. Engraving curved forms is a little tricky as curves mean the focal sweet spot is never optimal. We are getting better with each experimental deck though :)

Want to engrave your deck but not a KdG student... no hay problema, the FabLab MakerSpace is for EVERYONE. If you want to come experiment with 3D printing or laser machines, email [email protected] for more information. Open Lab hours will start up again September 21st.
