What is hand-foot-and-mouth disease?
Hand-foot-and-mouth disease in humans should not be confused with foot-and-mouth disease in animals. Although both are contagious viral infections, they are not caused by the same virus. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease usually spreads through direct contact with an infected person's hands, or through contact with a sufferer's saliva or stool.

The symptoms
1. Fever or flu symptoms
2. Poor appetite
3. Sore throat
4. Painful sores in the mouth
5. Dehydration - due to painful mouth sores
6. Spotty red skin rash
7. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease usually begins with a high fever and flu symptoms. About three days later, sores begin to appear in the mouth, followed by blisters on the hands and feet.

The Treatment
Should you experience any or all the above symptoms, it is advisable to see a doctor for effective treatment. Antibiotics are not usually prescribed as they are a viral infection; the disease takes seven to 10 days to clear up.
You can do the following to relieve the symptoms:
1. Take over-the-counter medications that relieve pain and fever. Be aware of any possible allergies you may have.
2. Use a spray and mouthwash to relieve painful sores.
3. Eat soft foods like soup (stay away from sharp tastes) because the sores and your throat and mouth make it difficult to eat.
4. Drink plenty of cool fluids to prevent dehydration.

How is the spread of the disease prevented?
Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is contagious. To prevent spread, do the following:
1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water after using the toilet or changing a cloth, or before handling food.

3. Take your children out of school or stay at home if you have hand-foot-and-mouth disease to prevent spread.
