While the recent news about Belize's coconut industry hitting historic milestones is undoubtedly exciting, it also presents significant challenges for small businesses like Reyes Organic Beauty. As a brand that relies heavily on coconut oil as the base for our skincare line, the current situation has left us in a dangerous position.

The announcement that Belize exported $1.9 million in coconut water to Jamaica and is set to expand into new markets is a testament to the potential of our agricultural sector. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Small producers who supply coconut oil are struggling to find enough dried nuts, leading to a significant disruption in the supply chain. For a small business owner like myself, this translates into serious hurdles.

I’ve been waiting for almost a month for a wholesale supplier to deliver the coconut oil we need, but with no luck so far. This delay is not just inconvenient; it means we are unable to produce our products and fulfill customer orders. As a result, we are now faced with the difficult choice of importing coconut oil, which adds unnecessary expenses to our already tight budget.

The rising costs associated with sourcing coconut oil from outside Belize are concerning, especially when considering the premium we already pay for quality ingredients. The coconut boom that is benefiting larger exporters is inadvertently putting smaller businesses at risk of increased operational costs and potential loss of revenue.

While Minister Jose Abelardo Mai referred to the increased demand as “another good problem,” it certainly doesn’t feel that way for small producers and businesses like Reyes Organic Beauty. We need a balanced approach that ensures both large and small players in the coconut industry can thrive without one overshadowing the other.

As the coconut industry continues to grow, I sincerely hope that our local farmers can keep pace with demand, allowing small businesses to access the raw materials we need to create our products. The success of the coconut should ultimately benefit all Belizeans, not just a select few.

While the coconut industry’s growth represents an exciting opportunity for Belize, it is crucial that the needs of small businesses are also addressed. We are all part of the same ecosystem, and it’s essential that we create a supportive environment for everyone involved.
